Pearson Backs Under-21 League

City boss Nigel Pearson has welcomed the introduction of the new Under-21 Professional Development League, as it provides a platform for the Club’s young stars to pick up valuable experience in a competitive environment.

City host their first home game in the new competition on Monday night when Crewe Alexandra visit King Power Stadium (kick-off 7pm), following away trips to Wigan Athletic and Derby County.

The previous two games have provided opportunities for youngsters such as Tom Hopper, Harry Panayiotou and Jacob Blyth to get match minutes, while competition rules also allow for a limited number of over-age players to be involved.

That should open the door for the likes of defender Zak Whitbread, whose involvement on Monday night was confirmed by Pearson at the weekend, as the summer signing from Norwich City builds on his match fitness.

“It is very important,” Pearson said of the new league, introduced as part of the new Elite Player Performance Plan.

“When you look at players from the Academy, some players are ready for the step up to the first team and some need that opportunity. Playing in a competitive league gives the younger professionals that extra stepping stone.

“You have to recognise that some players do need that extra step.

“I think it is always better to play in a competitive league. It is about winning games and games that have more meaning are much more helpful for players’ development.”

Monday night’s game at King Power Stadium is open to the public and kicks off at 7pm. Admission, payable on the turnstiles, is priced £3 for Adults, £1 for Under-18s and free for accompanied Under-8s.
