Kasper: I Had To Save It

Kasper Schmeichel admitted he feared the worst when City conceded a penalty in the closing stages of Friday night’s clash with promotion rivals Middlesbrough.

But the big Dane quickly put any doubt to the back of his mind, before producing a save from Marvin Emnes that could prove pivotal in the race to reach the Premier League.

Schmeichel has been a big performer for City since joining the Club from Leeds United 18 months ago, barely missing a game and consistently leading by example with his performance levels.

But after David Nugent’s goal had put City on the brink of the automatic promotion places, his save from Emnes on Friday night was arguably his biggest moment in Foxes colours to date.

“You just hope for the best,” said City’s No.1.

“I didn’t have a recollection of how far into the game we were, but I thought we were a lot further in than we were.

“Once the penalty is given, you’re devastated, but you have to stay strong. I believe in myself, I believe in my ability so you’ve got to go with your instinct.

“The only pressure you feel is the pressure you put on yourself. You’re one-nil up in the last minute of the game, so you have to save it.”

The significance of Schmeichel’s stop, and the additional two points it earned, became truly apparent on Saturday when draws for Hull and Crystal Palace ensured the Foxes held on to second place.

In a division of fine margins, Schmeichel feels Nigel Pearson’s side are now beginning to pick up the narrow victories that could make all the difference.

“What I’ve said before is that, if you want to get out of this league, you have to win those tight games. Burnley and tonight are good examples of that.

“We’ve got a good base to build on, we’re keeping clean sheets, we have good communication as a back five and we’re confident in every game we go into that we can keep the opposition out.

“With the strike power we have, both on the pitch and on the bench, we’re always going to have a chance."
