Home Form Key For Vardy

After netting City’s opener in the 2-1 Sky Bet Championship victory over Huddersfield Town on Saturday, Jamie Vardy has spoken of the importance of maintaining good home form.

The Foxes have played seven matches at home in all competitions this term – drawing their first 0-0 with Leeds united, before six consecutive victories over Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers, Barnsley, Derby County and the weekend’s win over the Terriers.

That vein of form sees Nigel Pearson’s men in hot pursuit of Burnley and Queens Park Rangers, and three points clear of fourth-placed Nottingham Forest, who dropped points to City’s next opponents, AFC Bournemouth, at the weekend.

Vardy’s strike against Huddersfield, along with an Anthony Gerrard own goal from a wicked in swinging Anthony Knockaert corner helped maintain the run and set City up perfectly for the tie with the newly promoted side on Saturday.

And although City could have won by more in an entertaining fixture, Vardy was just happy to have banked the three points, saying: “Like I said before we’ve been making it hard work but if we have to take 2-1 wins we’ll do it every single week, and if it gets us promoted then everybody will be happy with it.

“You need to make your home stadium a fortress, and we’re managing to do that, we’re getting results and you can see the fans are behind us as well. They’re like a 12th man at times.

“I’m enjoying it at the minute, although I’m not enjoying coming off when I’ve got cramp in both my legs! But that’s what happens when you do all that running so I’ll take it.”

Vardy’s strike was an impressive one, and his third of the campaign to go alongside some impressive and typically energetic displays in a blue shirt.

“As soon as I’ve taken the touch, the centre back was coming across so I’ve either got to hit it or take him on, and it was easier to hit it.

“We needed to start quickly and positively, and as it showed from the start they couldn’t really handle us. We got the early goal, put the pressure on, and they managed to start coming back into it a bit later, but Anthony [Knockaert’s] delivery for the own goal is one of those deliveries that defenders and goalkeepers hate because they can’t come for them.

“The early goal made them push on a bit more and made them push into the space, which allowed us to counter attack more.

“When it broke down for us they were getting the counter attack as well. It was an end-to-end game and obviously the neutrals will have loved it, but we got the three points and that’s all that matters.”
