U21s Claim Plate Title In Hong Kong

Leicester City Under-21s stormed to the HKFC Citibank Soccer Sevens Main Plate title with a series of three sensational wins on Sunday morning.
After a disappointing opening day, the Foxes faced Chelsea in a tricky quarter-final, but bounced back in impressive fashion to secure a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from last year’s Player of the Tournament, Harry Panayiotou.

That victory, against one of the pre-tournament favourites, set up a semi-final clash against Singapore Cricket Club, and the young Foxes again rose to the challenge with a 1-0 win.

Midfielder Ryan Watson scored the all-important goal, which meant the Foxes had a chance to secure the Main Plate title, adding to the Main Cup and Main Shield titles they had won in their only two previous Hong Kong appearances.

In their way stood defending Main Plate champions and local Hong Kong side BC Rangers, who had managed to avoid defeat in all six of their matches during last year’s tournament.

After a close first half in the exciting seven-a-side format, Joe Dodoo broke the deadlock with a fine run and finish through the middle, before another Panayiotou goal sealed the win.

It meant the young Foxes ended the season in Hong Kong with a piece of silverware for the third straight season, and have now completed a clean sweep of Cup, Shield and Plate titles since their debut in the tournament three years ago.

Afterwards, Academy Director Jon Rudkin, who along with Nicky Eaden, had led the team, told LCFC.com: “To come away with a trophy is very pleaing for the players and staff out here, who have all done wonderfully across some very difficult games.

“It’s very humid out here, and temperatures reached about 36 degrees, so for the lads to start the day with a win over Chelsea was a real credit to them.

“The tournament has been a great learning experience for the players and really highlights the importance of the one-on-one scenario, as well as the fine margins between defeat and victory.

“After a tricky first day, the team adapted and learned very well and you can see that improvement in the results.

“It has really been a wonderful tournament to be involved in with some top Premier League clubs. This year we’ve also seen the quality of the teams from Asia highlighted, as their performances have really lit up the tournament too.

“It’s a great way to end the season, and a big thank you goes to the owners for allowing us to come and compete out here, as well as Nicky Eaden and the staff, who have done a wonderful job.”
