Schmeichel: Good To Be Back

Foxes goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel can’t wait to take on Ligue 1 giants AS Monaco on Saturday after completing a successful return to action against Port Vale on Tuesday night.

The Denmark international was between the sticks for Nigel Pearson’s squad during their impressive 1-0 victory over Vale, and could well feature at King Power Stadium on Saturday.

It’ll be no easy job though, as Schmeichel will be tasked with keeping the prolific Colombian striking sensation, Radamel Falcao at bay, but it’s a challenge he’s excited to undertake.

"I am looking forward to Monaco,” said Schmeichel. “It’s a great test for us. They’ve been busy in the transfer market, so it’ll be interesting to play against them and I think everyone is looking forward to it.

“We’re looking forward to the season. It has been a long time since I played in Leicester. It’s good to be back and I can’t wait for the season to start now.

“Against Port Vale I didn’t have a lot to do with my hands but we had a lot of playing out from the back, which is good in that formation. Overall everyone got 90 minutes so we got what we wanted.”

City boss Pearson has been experimenting with the use a of 3-5-2 system this pre-season, and its use seems to have been a hit with Schmeichel, who sees the benefits of having different options.

He added: “Three at the back has been working well. They are three big lads and three good footballers as well so I think it’s an exciting system to try out and it gives us a different dimension.

“It’s something that other teams will have to take into consideration when they play us – that we’re flexible and that we can adapt.

“If that system is played right, it’s a very good system. We saw Hull City and Watford have some success with it last season and if we play it right then it’s a good system.

“It gives us an overload situation in most areas of the pitch, because you can effectively play with four strikers, five in midfield, and if they play with two strikers then you’ve still got three at the back to handle that.

“In a way it feels like you’ve got more players on the pitch sometimes. It has to be done properly, but if we can get it right it’s another string to our bow.”
