- Leicester City defeated Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday- Harvey Barnes was on the scoresheet alongside Youri Tielemans- The winger spoke to LCFC TV following the Premier League victory
It was a Bonfire Night to remember for the Foxes, who scored a goal in each half to claim three points at Goodison Park and a fourth win and fifth clean sheet from their last seven Premier League matches. Barnes provided his perspective on the away success, which was secured via a late second half goal from the winger after Youri Tielemans’ stunning opener broke the deadlock shortly before the break. On top during the first half, it was all about waiting for the breakthrough to come, he revealed, with a similar message given to the players at half-time by manager Brendan Rodgers. “I thought we dealt with and controlled the game really well,” the England international told LCFC TV. “They had some good spells in the game and we knew that they had some dangerous players. But we defended well and, with the ball, I think we were really good tonight. “We were creating chances, but we couldn’t quite get the breakthrough. We just had to stay patient, keep probing and we knew the chances would come and we kept doing that in the second half.
“We played some good football, had some good counter attacks and got the second goal in the end. It was just to keep doing what we were doing. When we get in the final third, not rushing too much, trying to create those openings and we did.
“In the second half, the counter attack was open a lot more and we used it really well. We had some great breaks and we looked like we were going to get that second goal. It didn’t come until late on, but it was important to get that to kill the game off in the end.
“We had quite a few counter attacks before that, but to see one of them come off was pleasing. Me and Madders (James Maddison) linked up well and in the box it’s just about getting a good contact on the ball and get a strike off and you see it fly in the net.” Focusing on Tielemans’ sensational hit, Barnes was gushing in his praise for the way the Belgium midfielder continues to produce in front of goal, adding another to his collection just two weeks on from striking against Wolverhampton Wanderers. He explained: “We created a lot of opportunities, scored two really good goals and obviously Youri scored another worldie goal so it definitely helps when he can do that! It looked great from where I was and I don’t even think I had the best view!
“I’m looking forward to seeing it back. You see the goal he scored last week and the goal he scored tonight. When you’ve got someone in the team who can do that and get you ahead, it can change the game. It was a real confidence boost for us.
“Even earlier in the season when results weren’t going our way and things weren’t going for us, we were still creating and scoring goals. I don’t think that’s left us. Definitely, in the last few weeks, even more so, it’s clicked. We’re scoring and creating a lot.
“We’re playing the attacking football that we know we’re best at. We want to take the game to the opponent, we don’t want to be defending games, so with the players that we have, that’s the football that we are playing at the minute.”
Coming into form both personally and as a team, with three goals of his own in four games, the former West Bromwich Albion loanee believes Leicester are now approaching every game with an attacking mindset that is serving the side well.
The 24-year-old added: “It’s been really good over the last month or so. It’s nice to see the goals going in and I think just having influence on games with the other attacking players and the team, it’s important for the team as a whole, we need to be scoring goals and the defensive side is important for the attacking players.
“We need to dig in when we’re sitting back in games. And when we get our chances, go and express ourselves and take our chances. That’s where I like to come into it and it’s great to see everyone flying at the minute.
“We’re coming into that good bit of form. It’s near enough half-way when we break up and to get ourselves up the table as high as we can, then regroup after that and push on, it will be important for us.
“Obviously it's a great result tonight and then hopefully we go and get another great result after the cup game in midweek and then we’ve got a great second half of the season to go and push on.”
