- Leicester City face AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday - Harvey Barnes previewed the King Power Stadium clash with LCFC TV- The Foxes lost out to Aston Villa on Filbert Way earlier this week- The squad are aware of the importance of this next fixture, Barnes says
A late loss to Aston Villa consigned Leicester to successive Premier League defeats, following the 2-1 reverse at Crystal Palace three days earlier. It leaves the Foxes 19th, precariously placed with fewer than 10 games remaining. The first of those fixtures sees AFC Bournemouth visit King Power Stadium this Saturday. Ahead of the clash, a 3pm BST kick-off, Barnes sat down with LCFC TV to provide insight into the mindset and mentality within the group heading into what could be a significant moment in the campaign. “We know where we are,” the winger said. “There’s no getting around that. The lads have sat down and spoken about it. We’re obviously not happy with the position that we’re in, that’s clear for everyone to see.
“But there’s nothing we can do about that, it’s all in the past now. It’s about looking at the next nine games and looking at what we need to do to keep this club in the league.
“It’s nice almost when the games are coming quickly when things aren’t quite going right. You don’t have to think too long about things, you can just focus on the next game. It’s a chance for us to tick these last nine games off.
“Bournemouth are obviously in a similar position to us, so they are thinking a similar thing. They are not going to come and make it easy. It will be a big test but back at home, if we take some of the positives from the other day, then I’m sure we can get a result on Saturday.”
The Academy graduate scored City’s goal in Tuesday’s reverse – his 10th league strike of the campaign – but it wasn’t enough to take anything from the game, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s sending off leaving Leicester with 10 men for the final 20 minutes. Bertrand Traoré then scored the visitors’ winner three minutes from time. “The other night was tough,” the 25-year-old admitted. “For good periods of the game, we were good, we kept it simple when we had to. We knew they are a good side so we weren’t going to just go and chase the game and let them play the game they wanted to.
“We wanted to make it difficult and limit the space. Going behind was obviously disappointing, but to get back in the game when we did, it was at a good time. In the second half, we kept it tight, we kept possession, we created a few chances and obviously little mistakes, going down to 10 men, then it’s tough.
“After that, there was still 20 minutes left. We were sticking in there, fighting and it’s a great finish in the end that wins it for them late on. Sometimes you need that little bit of luck and quality. At the minute, that’s what is lacking for us.”
Far from where City wanted to be in at the start of the season, Barnes says everyone must accept they must, any way possible, find a route to securing more Premier League points, starting this weekend.
The England wideman added: “That’s a lot of the frustration for this year. The quality is there. You see it when you look around at the players that we have here and it’s difficult to see that we’re in this position, but we are.
“There’s obviously reasons why and it’s not an easy solution, otherwise it would have been done a long time ago. It’s just about bringing it all together and finding a way for us to get results and for it to work. That’s how football is.
“We as players have the quality, we know we have. It’s just about putting that all together to find results, whether it’s pretty or not, and picking up points quickly.
“There are teams who are doing a lot better than us in the league that on paper may not have the quality that we do here, but they’ve got it right and everything is working well. That’s what we’ve struggled with this year, and we’ve got to put it right now.”
