- Tottenham Hotspur are the visitors to King Power Stadium in Sunday’s final Premier League fixture of 2020/21 (4pm kick-off)- Ryan Mason’s side are currently seventh in the table, requiring a win to secure a European place for next season- Football.London’s Alasdair Gold previews the clash with Leicester City, pointing to both sides’ need for points- Gold is expecting goals as two attacking sides come together on the final day of the campaign
Spurs will arrive at King Power Stadium for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Leicester City (4pm kick-off) knowing that they need to claim victory on the final day of the season in order to stand a chance of making their Europa League ambitions a reality.
Currently sitting in seventh position in the top flight table, Ryan Mason’s side are three points behind West Ham United, who currently occupy the final Europa League spot.
But the Lilywhites lost ground on their rivals following the midweek 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa, which Gold believes was a big blow to their hopes of a top six finish.
“It’s a very different European hunt for Spurs unfortunately and it does make it a huge game on Sunday,” the journalist commented.
“Tottenham are going into it with no one desperate to get into the UEFA Conference League, I think they would have to admit that, but they have to win and hope West Ham slip up to try and sneak into the UEFA Europa League again.
“It was a big result on Wednesday night, a really disappointing one for Spurs losing to Aston Villa, which shifted everything out of their hands.
“I think there was a lot of expectation this season. Tottenham were previously, for four years, in the top four and it was top three for three of those as well.
“Then [José] Mourinho came in, it was within expectation, he said it himself, that they were going to challenge at the top again. They desperately need to get this new manager in place because right now they are treading water and the fans are not happy.”
While Harry Kane (22) and Son Heung-Min (17) have led the way in terms of goals, and also assists, with 13 and 10 to their names respectively, there has been a lack of support, Gold feels, although Gareth Bale has chipped in with some important contributions.
He explained: “You’d think Kane would want to finish the season with the Golden Boot and that will drive him on. He has to finish the season with a bit of style and Leicester is a team that he certainly has an eye for goal against.
"It’s been Tottenham’s problem this season that after Kane, you have Son, who had a terrific first half of the season, but for one reason or another, in 2021 it just hasn’t gone the same way for him.
“He’s looked a shadow of the player he was in the first half. I’d say Gareth Bale will come back into start, he couldn’t start on Wednesday; he had a quad problem. If he’s fit, that gives Tottenham something extra that he has.
“You could argue that he hasn’t done it against the bigger teams, but whenever he’s played, he’s certainly been a threat for Tottenham, and you can’t really look too much further than Son and Bale.”
Also discussing the tactical battle that could play out on Filbert Way come Sunday, Gold weighs up how each team will be feeling going into an important final game.
“Amongst the Tottenham fans, there’s probably not a lot of confidence,” Gold admitted. “The players, you hope there’s some confidence there, purely because of, maybe not this season, but in previous seasons what they have done against Leicester.
“It’s an interesting one because last season they very much sat back and caught Leicester on the break, and it worked very well at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This season it didn’t, and Ryan Mason is a little different.
“He wants them to go out and play and I just wonder whether that might not be the right thing to do against Leicester, currently the way they are.
“Obviously, it didn’t go that well for them the other day, but they're on a high from the FA Cup and they are going to be confident themselves.
“Games between Leicester and Spurs have always got goals, that’s what you can always guarantee, and I think it’s going to be very similar on Sunday. Both teams have to go for it.”
