- Foxes fan Jaison shares his story on Rainbow Laces Day 2021- The Atlanta native started supporting Leicester City nine years ago- He praises the Club’s support of LGBTQ+ inclusion and the work of Foxes Pride- Kasper Schmeichel has donated a signed rainbow captain’s armband to Jaison
A member of the Club’s LGBTQ+ fan group – Foxes Pride – Jaison has been a City supporter since 2012, with his love for the Club beginning when he bought a second-hand LCFC scarf.
"It all started at a thrift store,” he said. “About 70 per cent of my clothes are thrifted and I was looking for something to keep me warm. I see this strange scarf, it kind of looks at me and I think that it could be quite fashionable.
"It had the Leicester City logos on the ends, the Foxes Never Quit motto along the bottom and Martin O’Neill’s Blue Army embroidered on it too.”
For Jaison, he believes it was love at first sight when he picked the scarf up, and says he has been hooked ever since.
He added: “When I bought the scarf, I took it home and started to do a little digging about the Club and they instantly became my team. You could say it was love at first sight with Leicester City.
"I’m a Philadelphia Eagles fan so I’m used to torture, but I saw this club in a small city in the Midlands and think that they’re kind of like my Eagles.
“You learn to love them, then hate them, but they’re always there for you. From the really low times to the high times, and trust me the highs have been good these past few years.
"When we won the league... God, I jumped and I cried! I wasn’t living with my husband at the time, but when he used to come over, he hated it when I woke up early to watch the games.
“He prayed the games would be at least after 11am or noon, but I’d wake up whenever. I was obsessed. I still haven’t been able to make him a fan yet though.”
Discussing his love for the Club, he describes the past nine years as a roller-coaster journey.
“Let me get this straight, the 2014/15 season tested me as a fan! It was crazy but nobody could ever have imagined what would happen next,” he said. “The 2015/16 season was unbelievable and to this day I still can’t believe we won the Premier League – it was just incredible!
“So yeah, there’s been ups and downs supporting this great club, but this is the roller-coaster I signed up for when I chose this team, so I’m in it for life now!”
Jaison is full of praise for the work of Foxes Pride and credits Leicester City for promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion: “It’s wonderful to see so many high-profile players from across the Premier League supporting Rainbow Laces.
"It brings me a lot of pride to know that the league and teams are talking about issues important to me because for the LGBTQ+ community all we ask for is respect.
“If we want to continue on and live together in unity and have some sort of common place, then we have to have a little respect. I’m very happy Leicester City support Rainbow Laces and the work they’ve done with Foxes Pride in recent seasons has been phenomenal.
“This is another reason why I love the Club. The team represents the city of Leicester so well, and that makes me proud to be a Foxes fan. It is a family club, and everyone loves them. The community is invested in the team, there’s a great unifying spirit here and we’re all part of this amazing journey.”
As part of the Rainbow Laces campaign, Foxes captain Kasper Schmeichel donated a signed rainbow captain’s armband to Jaison.
He explained: “I was blown away to receive Kasper’s rainbow armband, it’s absolutely wonderful and I’m so grateful to receive it. Kasper is a hero of mine. He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, if not the world.”
Foxes Pride work with Leicester City to tackle homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in football, while promoting the welfare of the Club’s LGBTQ+ fans and ensuring King Power Stadium is a safe and welcoming place.
