- Leeds United are the latest visitors to King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon (2pm kick-off)- It will be the first Premier League meeting between the two sides on Filbert Way since 2003- Journalist Beren Cross spoke to LCFC TV ahead of the fixture, outlining Leeds' anticipated plans- He expects an intriguing encounter after positive midweek results for both teams
The Whites recorded a hard-fought 2-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Tuesday evening thanks to goals from Raphinha and Jack Harrison, ending a run of three consecutive defeats in all competitions.
Marcelo Bielsa's newly-promoted outfit endured defeats to Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this month, as well as an Emirates FA Cup Third Round exit at the hands of League 2 side Crawley Town.
Cross says it was vital that the Yorkshire club were able to get back to winning ways on the road ahead of what he expects to be a very tough test against Brendan Rodgers' side at King Power Stadium (2pm kick-off).
"I think it was a classic case of just getting the three points when they needed them," Cross began, referencing the fixture at St. James Park. "It wasn't particularly pretty on Tuesday night. Newcastle haven't been in good form and haven't been playing particularly well.
"Off the back of what was a really troubling defeat to Brighton 10 days earlier, Newcastle was definitely a huge opportunity for Leeds to get back on two feet and to try and reassert themselves and get some momentum going.
"Newcastle improved massively in the second half and probably deserved a point but three points is the main thing and Leeds will move on from this into a very hard game on Sunday, but it's a start at least.
"It's been a choppy start to the year. Crawley was the archetypal FA Cup upset - they didn't play well, didn't turn up, made seven changes, there were some odd decisions during the game from Bielsa and Crawley just caught them cold and fully deserved the win.
"Brighton was the next one and of the three was probably the most troubling because there really weren't any excuses, they should have done a lot better against Brighton, who have struggled for most of this season.
"It's very easy to get carried away with things. It was three defeats without scoring, which doesn't look good, but when you consider that the first game of the year was away at Spurs, which has proved to be a difficult challenge for most teams, apart from Leicester of course."
Cross believes it is shaping up to be an intriguing and entertaining encounter after the reverse fixture in November produced five goals, with the Foxes coming out on top, winning 4-1.
"Any Leicester fans watching the Elland Road game will know that Leeds love to attack and will attack whoever they are playing," the Yorkshire-based journalist continued.
"They are the most predictable team in the league in that whilst on the day they can do very creative, surprising things on the pitch. I think going into it, Brendan [Rodgers] and his backroom staff will know exactly what Leeds are going to do.
"All you have to do is look at the results. They have dished out a few hidings and they've taken a few. The visit to Manchester United really hurt the Leeds fanbase because United are the old enemy, the biggest rivals that Leeds fans have, they really don't like each other.
"So to go and lose 6-2 in what could have easily been 10-8, they really could have hit double figures if [Illan] Meslier hadn't made a few outstanding saves in the second half. Then you contrast that with going to West Bromwich Albion and scoring five. You know they will go to King Power Stadium on Sunday and they'll be well up for attacking."
With Bielsa having to decide how to shuffle the pack again following their first win of 2021, due to injury, Cross expects the re-inclusion of influential central midfielder Mateusz Klich at the weekend. The Poland international has featured in all 19 of Leeds' Premier League games this season, although he only appeared as a substitute against Newcastle.
He added: "There was an interesting change on Tuesday night. Mateusz Klich has been a near ever-present for Bielsa and apart from a dead rubber in the Championship that he was rested for, Klich would have racked up 112 consecutive league starts.
"He's a dead cert on the teamsheet but he was dropped on Tuesday so there's definitely things changing for Bielsa and you wonder how he will approach it personnel wise on Sunday, whether he'll come straight back in.
"Marcos Llorente, the Spanish international centre-half, has got injured again, so that will require some reshuffling and I do wonder if Klich comes back in. Regardless of the personal, Leicester fans can certainly expect Leeds to attack and I think it's going to be very similar to the game at Elland Road.
"I do think Leeds are a good team for Leicester to play. Leicester are quite happy to step off a little bit and then just absolutely punish them on the break so it will be a great game."
