- Evening Chronicle’s Lee Ryder provides an insight into Sunday’s opponents, Newcastle United- Ryder says the Magpies will be encouraged by their performance against Liverpool in midweek- Newcastle drew 0-0 with the 2019/20 Premier League champions- City head to St. James’ Park for their next Premier League fixture (2:15pm GMT kick-off)
Steve Bruce’s men claimed a draw from their clash with the current Premier League champions to move onto 19 points from 15 outings for the 2020/21 season.
Ryder, who regularly covers Newcastle, says that result will have provided the north east outfit with belief ahead of Sunday’s match at St. James’ Park.
“It was a massive boost, really, because I think when people looked at the three games that Newcastle had over the festive period – Man City, Liverpool and Leicester – a lot of people said they’re not going to get any points,” he said of Newcastle’s draw with the Reds.
“So, to have one point already on board, I think that’s fantastic for the fans. It’s great for Steve Bruce, it instils that bit of confidence and they’ll go into that game against Leicester with their tails up.
“If Newcastle can get the defensive part of their performance right, and maybe add a little bit more of a spark in the final third, then you never know.
“It would be a tight victory, but it’s not impossible now, and with Callum Wilson working so hard and always a danger, you can’t write him off. Throughout 90 minutes, he’s always waiting to pop up. Newcastle have got plenty going for them.
“They have had some injury problems and problems with COVID-19, but I think they’ll fancy this one. Certainly, from that Liverpool game, that will give them the belief that they can emerge with something from this game.”
Last term, the Foxes beat Newcastle twice in the Premier League, first registering a Club record 5-0 victory at King Power Stadium in September, before winning 3-0 on New Year’s Day 2020 at St. James’ Park.
“We certainly got to know what Leicester were about last season in both games,” Ryder added. “It was 5-0 at King Power Stadium and a very solid and easy win for Leicester at the start of last year.
“Newcastle, that day, did suffer a lot of injuries – I have to bring that in, so that was a mitigating factor on the day. I think they ended up with 10 men because they’d got about four injuries in 15 minutes.
“I’ve never seen anything like that before. I think that was a big factor, but this time, as I say, with more players available, confidence is going well, I think Newcastle will look at this as a totally different challenge now.
“Maybe, they can take advantage, because Leicester have had a packed schedule as well. Newcastle rested three or four players against Man City and some didn’t play against Liverpool, so there’s fresh players to come in as well.
“They’ve got to go into it and hope they can emerge from it with at least a point.”
