- Leicester City welcome Premier League champions Liverpool to King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon (12:30pm kick-off)- A win for the Reds would see them climb above the Foxes in the table and into third- Mo Stewart of The Anfield Wrap talks through Liverpool's recent results and campaign to date- He believes it is only a matter of time before Jürgen Klopp's side get back to winning ways
The Reds arrive at King Power Stadium to tackle Leicester City in a 12:30pm kick-off on Saturday after a run of three consecutive home defeats in the Premier League, losing to Burnley, Brighton & Hove Albion, and most recently, league leaders Manchester City. The champions have, however, taken maximum points from their last two away trips, winning 3-1 at both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United ahead of facing the Foxes, the team directly above them in the current standings. "It's been a really wild season, but I think for Liverpool in particular, off the back of the title win and the fact that we didn't really get to celebrate it properly, there was a feeling of unease around the club," Stewart told LCFC TV. "And then you add in the injuries that came and the relentlessness of the season, you can see how things can tumble quickly. The form table says we're below Leicester, the real table says we're below Leicester.
"But I still think when the two teams get out onto the pitch, we'll be able to see quality wise, we're not far behind. It's a lot closer than it's been in previous years but I still back this team to come out and put a performance in.
"We've got good memories of going to King Power Stadium from last season so here's hoping that comes into their memory."
Stewart believes the lack of a recognised centre-back partnership has not only led to difficulties in that position, but also further up the field, with the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson playing in a more unfamiliar defensive role.
Following the arrival of Ben Davies (from Preston North End) and Ozan Kabak (from Schalke), both brought in during the January transfer window, he is hoping that the Reds will now be able to put those defensive worries behind them.
He explained: "It causes issues all over the pitch. In a strange way, look at what happened to Manchester City last season when they lost [Aymeric] Laporte, then they put Fernandinho back there.
"At the beginning, it seemed like a good idea, and then you see the knock on effects in other areas over the course of the season. I feel like the same thing has happened to Liverpool.
"When you've got someone like Henderson, it's really tempting to put him there because his reading of the game is so fantastic, but then when you stop scoring goals at the other end and you wonder why, you realise it's actually having an effect everywhere.
"Getting bodies back in general is going to be massive. We may actually see one of the new centre-backs debut in this game as well, so hopefully that will mean Henderson will move a bit further forward."
Assessing the quality Liverpool have at their disposable, including the dangerous front three of Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, Stewart expects Jürgen Klopp's side to get back to their best sooner rather than later.
"They are still great players, you still watch them on the pitch and you still know they are capable of great things," he added. "But if you think about how long they have been our premium attack, other teams have had time to think about how they work and to look into and kind of shut down everything they do well.
"You put that together with a bit of mental fatigue, maybe a lack of confidence from a couple of games where it doesn't work and these things can snowball.
"It was interesting to see the freshness that Diogo Jota brought to our attack and how that influenced the early stage of the season, how we were able to score a lot of goals. I think his return can't come soon enough.
"It's a tough one because obviously it was massive game against City. We were looking at it as a way to get right back into the title race and then it's compounded by the injuries and the individual mistakes, so confidence is possibly going to be a bit low.
"There's still quality in the squad. Having the week to get it out of your system, maybe reset a little bit, will probably help. And hopefully a few bodies are back now, some of the ones who came back in during that game will have a little bit more sharpness, more fitness about them now."
