- Leicester City host Manchester City at King Power Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off)- The Premier League champions visit the East Midlands after successive 5-0 wins at home- Mark Ogden, from ESPN, believes the Foxes will pose a serious test for Man City- He spoke to LCFC TV as part of the Matchday Live show, which airs for free on Saturday
Pep Guardiola's reigning Premier League champions visit Filbert Way on Saturday to tackle a Leicester City side who, like Man City, have won two of their opening league fixtures so far in 2021/22. The Foxes also defeated the Citizens to lift the FA Community Shield at Wembley last month.
However, Ogden, a regular follower of the Etihad Stadium club, believes Guardiola's ambition to win everything in English football will be undiminished.
"Man City will still want to win everything but I think it becomes a much harder challenge after the fact they didn’t sign Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo, or any other centre-forward," Ogden told LCFC TV's Matchday Live show, which goes to air at 1:30pm on Saturday afternoon.
"They are lacking a proper goalscorer and that could impact them. To win three trophies without a centre-forward… it would be tough to win any without one. They managed it last year with Sergio Agüero not playing as often. Gabriel Jesus was in and out and they can play Kevin de Bruyne there.
"It’ll be much harder this season to dominate as they have done because they haven’t got the centre-forward they need. Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool will be much closer this year."
Man City were beaten on the opening day of the campaign away at Tottenham Hotspur, but recovered with two five-goal triumphs over Norwich City and Arsenal, two sides who have struggled to form so far. As a result, Ogden is looking forward to seeing them put to the test in Leicester.
"The defeat at Tottenham was maybe a surprise considering the turmoil Spurs had been in, but I think it shows you that City are vulnerable," he added. "A team like Leicester, the way they play, are built perfectly to play against Man City because Man City like to dominate the possession and keep high.
"Leicester can play on the counter-attack, as we saw in the Community Shield, they can pick Man City off. In the past, Man City have frightened teams because they have such a cutting edge, but that could be diminished this year by the lack of a forward.
"We haven’t seen them away from home since that Tottenham defeat. They’ve had fairly comfortable home games. Let’s be honest, the teams they’ve played at home are the bottom two, Norwich and Arsenal, who probably won’t end up there, but they’ve not had the toughest of runs.
"This game at the weekend is a much better assessment of where Man City are right now."
Ogden doesn't believe Man City will take too much from their loss to Leicester at Wembley in August, but does think the Foxes could derive confidence from the knowledge that they have already defeated the champions in a competitive fixture this season.
"I don’t think it’ll be a big thing for Man City, but it'll certainly give Leicester the confidence to know they’ve beaten them in a game that mattered," he explained. "It’s a game that matters to Man City.
"They wanted to win it, but we’ve seen Leicester beat Man City quite a lot in recent years. The game at Etihad Stadium last season is an obvious one. It’ll reinforce Leicester’s belief and confidence that they can get a result and they remain the most likely, most equipped team, to break into the top four.
"Leicester are always there or there abouts, so an early-season win against Man City would be great for morale and I think they’ve got the ability to do it."
