- Tottenham Hotspur face Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday (4pm kick-off)  - Jose Mourinho’s side still harbour hopes of qualifying for European competition next season- Spurs come into the game off the back of two victories, including in the north London derby- Football.London reporter Alasdair Gold says those results will breed confidence throughout the team
Brendan Rodgers’ City travel to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the 4pm kick-off with a midweek win under their belt and face José Mourinho’s rejuvenated Spurs side in gameweek 37 of the Premier League season.
Speaking to LCFC TV, Gold believes Tottenham’s own good form makes Sunday clash an intriguing one, with both teams having taken three points in their previous encounters.
The north Londoners followed by their comeback win over Arsenal with a 3-1 defeat of Newcastle United at St. James' Park on Wednesday evening.
“Spurs are going to be highly motivated and driven after back-to-back victories, including in the north London derby,” he said.
“I think if Leicester had played Spurs pre-lockdown, or even in the couple of games after, you’d probably had found quite a different Tottenham team.
“There’s a little bit of momentum building, and actually, a lot of it is coming from the solid defence and they’ve got a lot of confidence moving forward now that Mourinho is feeding into.
“It’s going to be a cracking game and they’ll have paid very close attention to Sheffield United, who absolutely turned Spurs over a couple of weeks ago.
“For Leicester to go with their injury problems and get a terrific result, I think Spurs will have watched that and thought there’s still a lot of danger signs about this Leicester City side.”
Leicester’s 2-0 victory over the Blades secured European qualification for next season, something the Lilywhites are still hoping to achieve.
Gold believes Spurs’ back-to-back victories have reignited those hopes and given them a fighting chance of achieving their objective.
He continued: “It’s a way bigger chance than they originally had. They are just a point behind Wolves now and if I’ve done my maths correctly, they can still get in via seventh as well, if the FA Cup winner goes in their favour.
“It’s a strange match because, with Leicester winning, it did actually finally snuff the slim mathematical chance of Spurs finishing in the top four, so they won’t be having any adventures down that avenue again.
“It’s going to be a really great match. Leicester are obviously still battling away for that top four place, which they occupy right now, while Spurs have the Europa League place [to fight for].
“With Leicester being champions before and being in the Champions League, it’s probably a slight role reversal from the last couple of seasons when Spurs were going for the top four.”
England international Harry Kane has scored 15 Premier League goals this season and, along with Son Heung-min, is seen as being key to Mourinho’s attacking options.
“Spurs haven’t been creating many chances, yet they’ve scored five goals in the last two games because pretty much any chances that have come their way they’ve been clinical with,” Gold added.
“It’s very hard to look past Harry Kane because if anything is served up on a plate he will gobble it up. Son is probably the other one, he’s been very similar in that he hasn’t actually been performing at his highest level, yet he’s been getting goals and assists.
“I think he’s actually had his record tally of goals and assists this season, 11 goals and 10 assists, so 21 direct contributions, even though he’d probably be the first to admit that he’s not had the best of seasons, but stats-wise he’s absolutely shining.
“Steven Bergwijn, maybe from the bench, is another one to keep an eye on. He’s a very young talented guy who set up Kane’s first goal in the previous match and is one to watch.
“That’s the thing Spurs have, that they haven’t in the past, two or three attacking players to come onto the pitch, and now they can influence games in the second half as well.”
