Manchester City provide the next test of the Foxes’ credentials, facing the Citizens – who are also yet to register a point in the WSL – in a 2pm kick-off at Academy Stadium on Sunday. Speaking to the media in Friday’s pre-match press conference at Leicester’s base, Belvoir Drive, she discussed how they were able to utilise the international break to work on specific areas of the game in order to have the best possible chance of picking up those elusive first points in this weekend’s fixture…
Assessing the season’s start
Bedford began: “We’re disappointed to be in a position where we picked up no points out the first three games. A lot of people just look at the result and don’t go back and watch the game and I think it feels different in this moment to what it felt like last season, because despite the results, we’ve taken positives from all three games and felt that in all three we’ve been really competitive.
“It’s just been fine margins across all three that have probably been the difference between us taking something and nothing. That’s a good place to be in the sense that you want to be competitive. You want to be close.
“It’s frustrating to not have anything at this point, but there were many games last season with wider gaps between us and the opponent and at times, we got results in those games.
“If we keep our eyes on that, it’s about making sure that we stay focused as a group and stick together, which I’m confident that the players are doing. We trust ourselves. If we keep playing as we are, then across the 22 games, it will come good.”
The plan of action
“One of the areas that we reflected on in the first few games is how we can punish teams a little bit in those key moments," the Foxes manager explained. "We’ve possessed the ball well and got it into some good areas, but in those transition moments, when we pick it up in really good shape, we win the ball back, we definitely want to be more deadly in those moments.
“With the group that have been with us during the break, that has been a key focus. Today (Friday) is the first day that everyone has been back together. There have been some real positives from that.
“When you look at the opponents that we are going to be facing over the next couple of weeks, we feel that how well we secure the ball and build from those moments to try and create something, is going to be really key for us.
“We don’t spend all of the training sessions thinking about the opponent. We spent a lot of time thinking about us. There’s a buzz around the players being together and I feel like going into the weekend, we can take the resilience that we’ve produced in our out of possession shape and our hard work without the ball in the first three games. I’m excited to see what the team produce.”
Analysing the opposition
The former England youth international coach added: “You look at the players that they’ve got, and the number of players they had away on internationals, they are a top team with top players. As we’ve shown, good teams don’t always get results, it depends on the team and what happens on the day.
“I have no doubt that they’ll be very focused on the game this weekend and they’ll see it as an opportunity to take points. But at the same time, we’re not here to get rolled over, we’ll put up a fight and hopefully get something from it. We’ll never underestimate them, but it’s 11 vs. 11 at the end of the day and our players will be ready.”
