_- LCFC Women take on Aston Villa in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Friday- The Foxes returned from the winter break with an Adobe Women’s FA Cup success_- Josie Green previewed the 7pm kick-off at Pirelli Stadium and the challenge awaiting- Tickets for the game remain available to purchase online HERE
A comprehensive Adobe Women’s FA Cup Fourth Round victory over Derby County on Sunday, which eased the Foxes back into competitive action following the Christmas break, was the ideal preparation for facing Aston Villa in the Barclays Women’s Super League, according to Green. The pair face off at Pirelli Stadium in Burton on Friday (7pm kick-off).
“It was nice to have a break and reflect on the first half of the season,” the Wales international said. “There are some really positive things that we can take from it and how we can implement those into this game and take all the learnings from previous games.
“As a team, it’s the same themes, how we can build from the first half of the season to make it the most productive for us. We have our targets for what we want to achieve, and we want to win every game, but when you look too far ahead, you can get wrapped up in numbers.
“The winter break is good for us players. When you’re on internationals it feels like you have no time to rest up and relax, just for mental health as well as physical, but everyone was excited to be back out there in the FA Cup and it was a good result for us and nice to get out on the grass again.”
Analysing the visitors, who sit ninth, just below Leicester in the current standings, Green acknowledged their qualities, having beaten City in all four previous WSL meetings, but is keen to concentrate on City’s own plan of action.
“They are going to be a really tough team,” the 30-year-old explained. “They’ve got some good players. We know they are really strong on the counter-attack and have some threats, we’ve seen that in previous games that they’ve played.
“It’s just about how we can nullify that as a team and use our strengths on Friday to work to our advantage. Any team that you come up against in the WSL is going to be a challenge. There’s no easy team in the league.
“Everyone is fully aware of that. We’re going to strive to be on our game as we always do. We take each game in front of us as it comes and how we can best prepare. We’re just focused on Friday and how we can give ourselves the best opportunity to get three points.
“It’s an important one for us but one that we’re all excited for and up for the challenge.”
Having played right-back in the victory over the Ewe Rams, as well as in the centre of defence several times this term, the versatile midfielder is keen to explore further ways to improve her all-round game as one of the more experienced players within Willie Kirk’s squad.
She explained: “It’s a new position for me and looking at what I’ve done well there and what I can do better going into the second half of the season. I play there for Wales quite a bit so it’s not something that is unnatural for me.
“But I think I’ve just embraced the challenge and enjoyed the process of learning something new because every team plays it a bit differently. It’s about taking the learnings. I’ve really enjoyed it so far and it’s something I’m going to keep on working on because it’ll just add to my game to have another string to my bow. To be able to play dual positions is a positive.
“My growth here has been really positive for me in many aspects on and off the field. I’ve grown as a person being here in being able to adapt to different positions and be more versatile. There are tools and techniques to help me off the pitch. And Leicester has really helped us to do that. I’m grateful for the time I’ve had here so far.”
