Leicester returned to winning ways last weekend against Everton, taking themselves up to seventh in the Barclays Women’s Super League, and hope to keep their good start to the New Year going. Here are the main talking points from the Manager’s press conference at Belvoir Drive…
A positive transfer window
City recruited four individuals during the winter window, including Japanese pair Saori Takarada and Yuka Momiki, who have hit the ground running, registering four goal involvements. Emilia Pelgander and loanee Asmita Ale have also joined. “We’re really happy with the business we’ve done,” Kirk told the media. “You never have everything go your way, but we were well planned and like the summer, we weren’t going to force anything. “The last thing we want to do is bring someone in with the wrong personality because we’ve worked hard trying to create a good culture here, so the person has got to fit us as much as the other way around.
“I think the four players can add something different and are at great ages. They’ve all got a long-term outlook, so I think we’re in a good place.”
Facing the top sides
The Foxes have taken two points from the top six so far this season, but Kirk believes his side can achieve more, having found themselves in plenty of winning positions this term.
Kirk added: “When you’re ahead in games, and you don’t see them out, it’s difficult. But there’s plenty of positives to take as you get yourselves in that position to begin with, like we were against Tottenham and Manchester Utd. “We’re always learning, and I think the Arsenal game was a pivotal one for us, where we knew we couldn’t let that happen again. “Later on in the season, we went 2-0 up against Man City, and even though they got back into the game, we held them to a draw and won the shootout, and to be honest, we could’ve won the game in normal time.” Breaking into top six
Kirk confirmed that a top-half finish is still the target for City, who have surpassed last year’s total, with four months still to play.
Discussing the table, the former Everton manager noticed a trend that shows the positive development of the league, but also the increasingly difficult task to be placed higher up in the standings.
“Finishing in the top half was our objective at the start of the season,” Kirk continued. “We think we know what it takes to get there. It feels like the top four are dropping more points than usual, and that shows the development of the league.
“The points that we think are needed for a top six finish might not be enough, but we are confident of hitting our target, and if that’s only good for seventh or eighth then so be it.
“But if we hit our season points target, then I’ll be happy that the team have achieved that, and I think it’ll mean we could finish in a good position.”
