The Foxes have won all three of their opening games so far this season, most recently beating Liverpool midweek in the Continental Tyres League Cup, but the Manager understands that this weekend’s match will be City’s hardest test so far. Here are the main talking points from Kirk’s press conference at Belvoir Drive…
Work in progress
Leicester remain the only team in the top two flights of women’s football in England with a 100 per cent record, and despite a blistering start to the 2023/24 campaign, the Manager still believes the best is yet to come from his City side.
“It’s been a really positive start to the season,” he told the media. “But it’s still in progress with improvements to be made. But [I'm] very happy with where we are, we’re changing the targets for players and they’re responding really well.
“We expect another slight improvement in the performance this weekend; it’ll depend on the opposition whether that performance is good enough to take points but we’ll definitely aiming to bring the points back to Leicester.
“We still need to be a bit cleaner with possession and have more patience at times, although that is coming and the second goal against Liverpool shows that. We waited for the space to open and passed the ball around nicely. “We’ve got to show patience in the ball. No player grew up wanting to stay in space, they all want the ball and to be involved, but we need to get them in that habitat of thinking: 'what are you doing for yourself and what are you doing for the team?'. It’s an educational thing and it’s a work in progress, but we’re doing well.”
Summer re-build
This current winning form has only continued from last season, which saw Leicester clinch safety on the final day of the season with a 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion, becoming the first club to overturn a 10-point deficit.
After a four-month summer break, which saw nine new signings arrive to the East Midlands, the Manager outlined that the hard work that has been done to reach this stage and is happy to see the players’ efforts come to fruition.
He added: “Everyone has seen how positively we finished last season and now it was about taking that positive finish, adding to it in the summer transfer window and prepare well in pre-season to put it into practice.
“It’s probably going better than expected; we’re ahead of the curve. But we’re not going to rest on our laurels, and we want to keep that improvement coming. I’ve always said you won’t get the best Leicester until the second half of the season but if that comes sooner than brilliant.”
Man Utd away
This weekend’s opponents come in the form of Manchester United who currently sit fourth in the WSL with four points, collected from an opening day win over Aston Villa before being held to a 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Leigh Sports Village.
“What we’ve noticed in our analysis of their game is that they can give you chances,” Kirk continued. “They’ve conceded in every game they’ve played so far this season so we need to make sure they do again should we want to take anything from the match.
“They’re also very good in the attacking areas, whatever their front three might be. Ella Toone for example, we know what talent she can bring to their squad.
“But they’re balancing a busy schedule themselves, facing us in-between two UEFA Women’s Champions League games with Paris Saint-Germain, so it will be interesting to see how they deal with that.”
