- Jonathan Morgan spoke to the media ahead of facing Everton on Sunday- LCFC Women host the Toffees in a 2pm GMT kick-off at Pirelli Stadium- The manager has belief that a first WSL win is not far away following recent displays- The midweek cup victory is a platform to build on in the league, he adds
A third game in seven days follows fixtures against Brighton & Hove Albion and Durham, as the pre-Christmas fixture schedule begins to ramp up for the Foxes, who are adjusting to life as a WSL club following promotion from the FA Women’s Championship. While a maiden victory of the season was secured in the Continental Tyres League Cup, there proved to be a frustrating end to City’s previous league fixture, when a stoppage-time winner handed the hosts all three points at AMEX Stadium.
Although they were denied a first point in the top-flight, from a performance perspective, Morgan was pleased with the team’s display, as he was in the midweek victory picked up in the north east.
The Foxes scored twice in a match for the first time this season and he is confident that the result has renewed belief throughout the squad, who were finally rewarded for their hard work and endeavour.
“The girls have been fantastic,” the LCFC Women manager told the media in his virtual press conference from Belvoir Drive on Friday afternoon. “They are positive, they are happy and we just look to try to take what happened against Durham and Brighton into the Everton game.
“We focus on our positives and work hard. Morale has never been an issue with us, the girls have a strong belief, and that win has just compounded our belief really.
“We can be creative and open teams up. I think the girls went into that game believing a little bit more in their own ability and it showed so we want to carry that into Everton in the league.
“Brighton just epitomised our luck at the minute, a 94th-minute goal and we had a corner 10 seconds before which didn’t get given and that changes the whole game.
“We keep going, we work hard, we’ve got our belief and we respect everyone, but we don’t fear anyone going into any game. We just want to now try and put in a performance and hopefully build for the second half of the season.”
Everton have themselves endured a difficult 2021/22 campaign to date, collecting seven points from their seven WSL matches to date. Following Willie Kirk’s departure last month, Jean-Luc Vasseur has been tasked with firing the Merseyside club back up the table.
Looking forward to the challenge ahead - a second meeting between the two sides this month - Morgan is very aware of the threats the away side will pose, but also knows that Leicester can produce a performance worthy of taking a positive result from the game.
“They’ve obviously brought in another fantastic manager who has got a whole wealth of pedigree in the game,” Morgan continued. “So I think it’s only a matter of time before they start to find that blend and consistency.
“But hopefully not against us and we can do some damage. Obviously we do want to get our first three points and whenever they come it’ll be fantastic and we’re hoping that’ll be this weekend.
“I believe that our players are really set up well now for the second half of the season when I think from our point of view, from December through to February, it’s a really big opportunity to really put our marker down and pull ourselves away from where we are currently.
“We’re more experienced, we’re wiser to the league and I think we are transitioning into the league. We just hope that can start to come together in games.
“We’re going to go and look to set up resilient, set up strong and look to go and get those three points for the fans. What we have to be aware of is that Everton are a quality team, but we need to have belief in ourselves that we deserve to be here.”
