This weekend sees Leicester travel to Tottenham as they return to Barclays Women’s Super League action, before meeting them again in April for the semi-final of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup. Ahead of the game, Foster spoke to the media at Belvoir Drive and below are the main talking points…
Closing the gap in the WSL
City head into the weekend three points behind Spurs, knowing that a win by two goals or more will see them leapfrog the London outfit into the top half.
Foster spoke about the challenge the Tottenham will provide, but that the Club’s aims of a top-six finish remains the ambition as they approach the run-in.
“We know what their [Tottenham’s] strengths are, and their transitions,” the Assistant Manager stated. “They’re a team that are high up the table and in a similar position to us, so we expect a tough game.
“The Club has the ambition of finishing in the top half, and that is still the ambition. Everything we can do to get us into that position, from now until the end of the season, will be done.”
Facing Spurs twice
Many will look at this weekend as a preview of next month’s FA Cup last-four clash, but Foster believes that the two games must be seen as separate events.
She added: “Obviously apart from the opposition, there are several games between each meeting so this weekend does give us an opportunity to get ahead on it but our focus right now is the WSL fixture.
“The focus on the FA Cup Semi-Final will come when it comes and we’ll use, not only this weekend, but the games beforehand as preparation for that.”
Rantala's form
In-form forward Jutta Rantala became the topic of conversation during Thursday’s press conference after a brace at Prenton Park saw the Finnish forward reach 14 goal involvements for the season. With key attacking players such as Lena Petermann slowly returning to full fitness, the Assistant Manager spoke about how key Rantala has been over the last few weeks. “We know the quality that Jutta [Rantala] has and she’s very versatile in terms of being able to play in the No.10 position or across that front line,” Foster continued.
“She’s really found her form in the last few weeks, which is fantastic for us. She’ll be a threat against any team we play and if I was a defender, I’d hate to come up against her right now."
