- Leicester City face Gillingham in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday afternoon- The third round tie will take place at Priestfield Stadium (12:30pm kick-off)- Forward Ayoze Pérez sat down with LCFC TV to preview the fixture- The Spaniard won the competition with the Foxes in 2020/21
Firstly reflecting on the 1-0 reverse against Fulham at King Power Stadium on Tuesday, which followed defeats to Liverpool and Newcastle United since Christmas, Pérez acknowledged that while Leicester City created sufficient opportunities to take something away from the game, they ultimately did not do enough to force a positive result on Filbert Way.
However, he believes there are several learnings to take from how the previous three league games have panned out, as Leicester prepare for a different type of test against Gillingham this weekend.
The Spaniard told LCFC TV: “We can do better than that, but at the same time, there were some positive bits of football that we can build on. If we had scored a couple of chances, we might be talking about something different, but in terms of performance overall, it can much better.
“We can start games faster, especially conceding so early, that makes a difference in a game, especially a Premier League game. Sometimes the opposition make it harder for you. It’s happened twice now in the home games and we’ve got to work on that.”
Moving on to the fixture the Foxes will contest in Saturday’s 12:30pm kick-off at Priestfield Stadium, the forward knows that their Sky Bet League 2 opponents will be savouring the challenge of facing a top-flight club.
“It’s going to be a massive game for them,” he continued. “It’s always a big game playing against a Premier League team when you are in a lower division, so they are going to be at it. It’s a good test for us going away from home.
“It’s a great game to build confidence as well, we want to get back to a winning feeling. Going out there and getting the win would help us in many ways. Hopefully we can start building out from there.
“When you’re in a negative run, the good thing is that when you’ve got many games in a row, you can straight away turn things around, so after Tuesday we’ve got another game on Saturday, that comes really quick so that’s great. It’s another chance to turn things around.”
FA Cup winners in 2021, Brendan Rodgers’ side have enjoyed recent successes in the prestigious competition, though the players are all aware of the importance of kicking off on the front foot in the third round.
The 29-year-old added: “Starting the competition well, a competition that we know very well and we’ve got far in recently… it’s a great chance for us to get to the next round and keep going from there.
“There’s never an easy game. Every team also prepare to play the game against us. It’s always tough. You’ve got to start from the first round you play. It’s something that you need to earn since the first game, so we need to take every single game seriously and be professional for every single game.
“That’s what we’ve got to do, go there and do our job, get the win and get into the next round. It will help us also in terms of confidence and it’s a competition we know we can do well in and go as far as possible.”
