- Leicester City picked up a valuable 2-0 Premier League win at Burnley on Tuesday night- Second-half substitutes James Maddison and Jamie Vardy were on the scoresheet for the Foxes- Manager Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for the defensive effort on show
After defending valiantly earlier on, City were already on top by the time Rodgers elected to bring James Maddison and Jamie Vardy off the bench with 20 minutes remaining in Lancashire. It was ultimately that duo who won the game for Leicester – their first Premier League success of 2022. "They’re the decisions you make as a manager," Rodgers said at full-time. "Coming to here, it’s a really physical test, so we went with Ki (Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall) to start the game and press the game up there. We knew, as the game opened up, we’d be able to bring James in with his quality. "[Vardy] was just electric in the game. Coming in for 20 minutes, you just sensed the defenders can really worry about him – his movement, his runs, his link-up play. He does what he does best – scores goals."
The shutout was particularly valuable for the Foxes and Rodgers believes the whole squad can take confidence from seeing their hard work being rewarded in testing circumstances in Burnley.
"It’s very important," he added. "It’s been too long since we've kept a clean sheet away from home. We want to win games and sometimes you can’t always keep a clean sheet, but they are important. Collectively, that’s what we’ve asked of the players.
"It’s a really collective effort and tonight, we didn’t have too many scares in all honestly, but collectively, we worked really hard. The concentration was good and then you get your rewards and that will be a big boost for the players."
