- LCFC Women played out a pre-season exercise with top-flight champions Chelsea Women on Sunday- The schedule will prepare the Foxes for their first-ever Barclays FA Women’s Super League campaign- Manager Jonathan Morgan came away pleased with what he saw at Belvoir Drive
Belvoir Drive was the venue for Sunday afternoon’s behind-closed-doors meeting between the Barclays FA Women’s Super League champions and the newly promoted Foxes, after tackling Liverpool last week. Up against a top quality side, LCFC Women’s manager was pleased with the whole squad’s efforts and performance, particularly in applying new strategies and tactics.
“The girls had a fantastic run-out against a fantastic opposition,” Morgan told LCFC.com after the final whistle. “It was a very competitive game and I think they really put a great shift in. “We applied ourselves very well today with what we worked on in training. We will tweak a few more things out of possession, which I think we were tested to the limit by Chelsea from that point of view.
“It was great to see the girls physically match the opposition in terms of fitness. It shows that we’re doing something right with them there too and it’s just another great building block to get us ready for the WSL.”
With many more tests to come during the upcoming campaign, Morgan feels the pre-season schedule will give them an indication of where the team are at and where they can strive to be.
He explained: “Like I’ve said all along, we want to be competitive, we want to consolidate in this league, we don’t want to be a team that comes in and fears anyone.
“But we’ll always respect every single opposition we play and I think we showed that with Chelsea today. We respected them, but we didn’t show any fear, we tried new things, we tried aggressive things, we tried creative things, which I was really pleased with the girls for.
“It will always be good to keep testing ourselves against these types of teams to see how we’re improving.”
As the season draws nearer, Morgan has identified progression in the way the team are playing and adapting to what is being asked of them.
He added: “So far, we’ve been focusing on out of possession, and I think the girls have worked hard on that and they’ve really applied that into the games we’ve had so far.
“We want to be very difficult to break down, that’s something that is really important to us for next season. Our fitness levels need to be really high too.
“It’s fantastic for them all to get minutes, and competitive minutes, and that will only bode well for us in training this week to get us ready.
“We’ll start to focus now a little bit more now on being in possession and getting them match ready for the first game of the season.
“I’m sure the girls will apply that into our game next week, just like they have done for the previous weeks.”
