- LCFC Women captain Aileen Whelan speaks following Sunday’s game- The Foxes lost 4-0 to Manchester City at Academy Stadium- The team need to up their game to start picking up points, she says- City have lost their opening four Barclays Women’s Super League games
A 4-0 reverse at Manchester City was the Foxes’ fourth straight WSL defeat at the start of the season as Khadija Shaw (2), Lauren Hemp and Yui Hasegawa all netted at Academy Stadium on Sunday. Whelan, who has featured in all five of Leicester’s fixtures across all competitions so far this term, felt there were positives signs from their first-half performance. However, a failure to take their opportunities, combined with a below-par second 45 minutes, led to a wide margin between the sides at full-time.
The skipper told LCFC TV in her post-match interview: “[In the] first half, everyone put a shift in and coming into the second half, we were off the mark. We weren’t anywhere near the first press or second press. “I think 4-0 is a harsh scoreline, but unfortunately, we weren’t there today and at the races for the whole 90 minutes and that’s what happens against a team like Man City. That the difference, you’ve got to be clinical.
“I should have put that in the net and I didn’t. It could have been a different game at 1-1, so I hold my hands up for that one. When we’re in front of goal, we’ve got to take the chances we get because you’re not going to get many against a team like City.
“I think we can be quite threatening with set pieces and it is something we do pride ourselves on. We’ve still got to be better at those, because we should be putting chances in the back of the net from set pieces. That was our downfall again.”
The quest for those first points continues, but the team must now start afresh and focus on the next challenge of welcoming Manchester United to Filbert Way on Sunday, stepping back out in front of home support following three successive away matches in league and cup.
“We’ve got to take every week as a new week,” the ex-Brighton & Hove Albion star added. “We’ve got enough time now to prepare for United and that’s going to be another tough game because they are flying already.
“Lydia [Bedford] has got decisions to make in terms of tactics and players and we’ve got to respect those decisions and go with the game plan to go out there and try and get three points on the board.
“The fans make such a difference for us and hopefully we get as many people there as possible to get behind us and push us. It’s a difficult point in the season when we’ve not got a point on the board, and that’s what we’re striving to do.
“We just need to treat it as any other game and go out to win it.”
