- Leicester City host Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Sunday (2pm GMT kick-off)- Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall speaks of City’s eagerness to learn from their midweek reverse against Spurs- The popular midfielder discusses his 2021/22 campaign, and how he hopes to continue his rapid rise at the Football Club
The Foxes’ 20th Premier League fixture of the season comes after Wednesday’s late defeat by Tottenham Hotspur – a game in which Leicester led until a dramatic spell in injury time saw them beaten by two Steven Bergwijn strikes.
City’s resolve has been tested before, and will no doubt be again, and Dewsbury-Hall says his team-mates will look to learn from their midweek loss in the coming weeks – starting with the Seagulls on Sunday.
“It was quite a shock, to be honest,” he said of City’s clash with Tottenham. “I think for a lot of the players, it’s something you’re not used to seeing. We played 94 minutes of the game really well and it was just that last lapse of judgement at the end that cost us.
“It was really low in there, and the players were just so upset for ourselves and the fans, but we’ve got a couple of days now and we can put it right at the weekend against Brighton.
“That’s the good thing about the Premier League. You’ve got a quick chance to bounce back, you’ve just got to try and learn from that, try and take what you can, and move on and move forward.
“I’ve never experienced anything like that, but of course, hopefully I won’t experience anything like that again. But that’s football, you can never predict what’s going to happen. The game is never won, no matter what the time is, so it’s something that you can definitely learn from.
“That’s the only positive you can take. It’s something that a lot of people will be looking at and it's about moving forward in a positive manner because no one wants that happen again. It’s an awful feeling, but it’s about dusting ourselves down now and moving onto the next game.”
During that match, the Academy graduate was substitute with two minutes of normal time remaining, but says he is fit for this weekend’s game.
“It was just a bit of cramp,” he explained. “Obviously, I had been out. I wasn’t training for a couple of weeks because of my calves, but it was just a bit of cramp. It’s fine now, it was just at the point where it was a tough game, right at the end, I didn’t want to risk anything.”
Back on Filbert Way, City will be tested by a Brighton side that in their last outing claimed a point from title hopefuls and European champions Chelsea.
“I think Graham Potter is doing a really good job there,” said Dewsbury-Hall. “They’re a good team, they play some good football, but we’re in that mood now where we’re trying to be ruthless.
“We’re going to use that as fuel now going into the weekend to try and get a really good result. It’s going to be tough, but [we’ll] work hard to get things right on the training ground, and take that into the game.
“I don’t see why we can’t come away with three points, and just keep looking forward to try and get a nice little run together.”
After a 40-game spell on loan at Luton Town in the Championship last season, 2021/22 has been a truly breakthrough campaign for Dewsbury-Hall.
He has featured 18 times across all competitions, making a European debut, scoring in the UEFA Europa League and featuring in the FA Community Shield triumph at Wembley Stadium.
He said: “This was what I hoped that would happen. I knew I’d get my chance and I wanted to take it. I feel like I’ve done well and I’m happy that I’m trying to cement a place in the starting XI because that’s what I want to do.
“Of course, I would love the results to be coming as well, and I think they will come. We’ve had some great results in the month, but we’ve also had some results where we could have got the win. It’s just about finding that consistency in the team and in myself personally. Then, we’ll keep moving forward.
“We’re getting players back now. It was nice to see JJ (James Justin) back the other night after such a long time. He’ll be a massive, massive plus for us, and in another couple of months, we’ll get other players back, so I only see it being a positive couple of months going forward when the team is back and we can go on a really good run.
“I’ve overcome a lot of hurdles to get to this point. That’s helped me, and I feel really comfortable playing in the Premier League right now. It is, as you say, quite early in my career in the Premier League, but I don’t feel daunted, and I feel like you need that confidence going onto the pitch because that’s how you play your best football.
“You don’t want to feel like you’re out of your depth because that’s when you start doing the things that don’t make you play well. I’m going onto the pitch just expressing myself, feeling confident and I feel at home. Long may that continue, and hopefully I keep improving.”
James Justin’s introduction on 53 minutes against Spurs was a welcome sight for everyone involved with Leicester City, not least the Club’s players, who will benefit from the dynamic full-back’s input for the remainder of the season.
“We’ve all seen how well he was playing before he got injured,” Dewsbury-Hall said. “He was one of the best full-backs in the league in my opinion, and he has been a massive miss. Everybody is so happy for him, and how hard he’s worked to get back to where he is now, and we’re just so excited to have him back.
“We don’t want to put too much pressure on him straight away, rushing [back], because it was a long injury, a tough injury, but we know when the time comes and he gets back to his best, it’s a massive, massive outlet for us.
“When he came on, you wouldn’t have thought he was out for that long. He had a spring in his step straight away, so it’s going to be a refreshing time for Leicester when he’s back and hopefully, he’s going to be back to his best soon.”
A Dewsbury-Hall themed rendition of Oasis’ Wonderwall often rings around King Power Stadium when the No.22 takes to the pitch for his boyhood club.
It only further contributes to the incredible journey he’s been on since he joined as an eight-year-old back in 2006.
“It’s a quality song, and to be honest, while you’re playing, you don’t really notice, but there are breaks in play where you do listen sometimes,” he added. “When it’s playing, it’s just like: ‘Wow, that’s amazing’. Everyone gets involved because it’s such a popular song.
“It’s just weird, knowing it’s about me and I’m thinking: ‘I’ve come through the Academy now and I’ve got all these fans singing my name’. That just gives me fuel to keep playing well because if they’re singing that song, I must be doing something right."
