Travelling away to the Russian outfit on matchday three of the UEFA Europa League campaign, a stunning comeback saw the Foxes secure maximum points for the first time in Group C, lifting Rodgers’ side up to second place in their pool. The result at Otkrytie Bank Arena backed up Saturday’s impressive league success at home to Manchester United and Rodgers explained the significance of claiming victory in the wider context of not only the group table, but also in providing a timely boost for the squad during a packed schedule of fixtures. “It’s very important,” the 48-year-old told LCFC TV. “Winning after winning is important. It was a huge win at the weekend. Coming away, we knew tonight we really needed to win, especially starting with a point and a loss in the first two games. “We thought that if we could get a win tonight, it would set us onto four points with two home games, and then it gives us a great opportunity to come out of the group.
“Tonight, I’m really pleased with that. Two wins out of two, it's great for the confidence of the players, and now we can get ready for another really tough game at the weekend.”
After registering his first for the Club at the weekend, Patson Daka netted all four of the visitors’ goals in the Russian capital, including an incredible nine-minute hat-trick either side of half-time. Following praise for the Zambian forward's performance, the manager was keen to laud the link-up between City's attacking players, with Daka’s strike partner Kelechi Iheanacho setting up two of his strikes, alongside Youri Tielemans and James Maddison also assisting the red-hot marksman. Leicester have scored four times in back-to-back games, though Rodgers is now keen to cut out mistakes at the other end of the pitch.
He explained: “There was some really good combination play and we found the spaces well. We played around from behind to find the space well.
“We always worry about conceding goals, so we have to look at that, but we’ve scored eight goals in two games – that’s always a danger to any opponent.
“In the main, we’ve defended well in my time here, so we need to get back to that, keeping clean sheets again, but of course, we’re looking a real threat going forward and that’s something we need to continue.”
The squad will now recuperate over the next 24 hours and then look to make sure they are mentally prepared for their return to Premier League duties as they travel to tackle newly promoted Brentford at Brentford Community Stadium on Sunday (2pm BST kick-off).
"We’ll get back late and we’ll recover tomorrow (Thursday), and then we’ll get out on the grass again on Friday,” the Northern Irishman added. “Lots of recovery for the players that are playing and some work for the guys that haven’t been.
“Just to keep them working and moving, and we'll get our final plan and tactical idea ready for the weekend.”
