- LCFC Women suffered a WSL defeat to West Ham United Women- The Foxes were beaten 4-0 in the capital on Sunday afternoon- Captain Sophie Barker was frustrated with the performance- She admitted they just were not at the races in the first half
Returning to top-flight action after the international break, the visiting Foxes found themselves three goals down at the break and it was a lead West Ham extended further late on in the game.
The captain was honest in her assessment of proceedings, admitting that the overall performance was not up to the standard required to compete in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.
“It’s disappointing really, a bad day at the office,” she told LCFC TV. “We just couldn’t settle down in the first five or 10 minutes and playing a team as good as West Ham, or any team in this league, you know you’re going to get punished.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t string a few passes together, which is disappointing because on our day we can play some really good football. We need to go back and look at that and why we couldn’t do that.
“To sum it up, we just couldn’t gel as a team. We used the ball as a hot potato, we were trying to play over the top on this really short, narrow pitch. And even the balls we played into Tash [Flint] and Siggy (Jess Sigsworth), they weren’t quality.
“When you play balls into them like that, you can’t expect them to deal with them or any of the other players to be involved around them. For me personally, our passing was off, our work rate was off.”
While things improved in the second 45 minutes, as the away side created more going forward, the 30-year-old believes valuable lessons have been learned which Leicester must take into a busy week of action.
The Foxes have just over 72 hours to recover before facing Manchester City in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup, and then Tottenham Hotspur await at King Power Stadium this Sunday (2pm kick-off), on matchday four of the WSL campaign.
Barker continued: “It was a better second half. The gaffer has changed it and credit to him we’ve gone four at the back and man for man in the middle as well. We just needed to do our individual jobs there and unfortunately, we weren’t doing that in the first half.
“He had to change it. You can’t use a half to do that in this league. You go 3-0 down and the game is already lost. We left it too late to do that. As players, we need to solve it on the pitch a little bit quicker, he can’t do everything.
“We’ll go back, analyse it tomorrow, we won’t dwell on it. We’ve got a game on Wednesday and fingers crossed we can bounce back from that.
“The girls can use this loss and look forward to a game now rather than dwelling on it. Hopefully we’ll bounce back. Obviously, it’s a tough test but one that we’ll look forward to.
“We’ll make some changes I assume in the next couple of days, because I think we had some tired legs out there today and then put on a better performance than we did today.”
