- Leicester City host Newcastle United at King Power Stadium on Boxing Day- Winger Harvey Barnes says the Foxes are looking to build on their pre-break momentum - City won four of their last five Premier League games before the FIFA World Cup- He also takes a closer look at the Magpies, who sit third in the table at present
The Foxes suffered a poor start to the 2022/23 season, going seven games without a win and losing six of them. However, more recently, Brendan Rodgers' men have won four of their last five Premier League matches, also overcoming rivals Nottingham Forest - propelling them up the table.
Barnes, who has netted six goals for City this term, is hopeful that his side can continue that form over the festive period now domestic football has returned after the FIFA World Cup break. Leicester City sealed a 3-0 win at MK Dons in the Carabao Cup earlier in the week too.
"The break probably came at a bad time for us," he told LCFC TV. "We were hitting good form and slowly climbing up the table. That performance the other day had good signs that we’ve come back and we’ve started where we left off a month or so ago. That’s going to be important.
"It’s a busy time for us and, if we’re playing well and we carry on that form that we had before, we can quickly see ourselves climbing up the table and get back to where we were. I had a good run of goalscoring form before the break. I feel like it’s been coming for a little while.
"We obviously started the season poorly by our standards and probably I myself was involved in that. Sometimes it’s difficult, when the team’s struggling, to get yourself up to a certain level. I feel like everything’s come together in the last few games. We look like a really good team again.
"Hopefully, for us, this Christmas period and into the New Year, we’ll hit those levels again."
Eddie Howe's Newcastle go into Boxing Day sat third in the Premier League standings - winning eight of their 15 games so far. Barnes is well aware of their dangers, but says Leicester's quality and their belief gives them a chance on Filbert Way.
"They’ve obviously had a great start to the season and they look like a good team this year," City's No.7 added. "It’ll be a tough game for us, we know that. But for us, we were confident coming into the break and we’re confident after it.
"If we play to the levels that we know we can – we’re scoring goals as we showed in the MK Dons game – so there’s no reason why we can’t go and win that game. It’s a busy period, over Christmas, away from football as well.
"You’ve got everyone seeing their families and everyone’s got different things going on. On Christmas night, you’re excited for the game the next day, it’s great.
"You have Christmas morning and Christmas afternoon and then your mind switches onto the game. It’s a great tradition (to play on Boxing Day) and it’s always a great occasion."
