- Becca Robertson shares her story ahead of this weekend’s dedicated Disability Matters fixture- She attends games at King Power Stadium with her guide dog Quizzie- The 46-year-old listens to matches through the Club’s audio descriptive service
Ahead of Saturday’s dedicated Disability Matters fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers at King Power Stadium, she spoke to LCFC.com to share her experiences of being a supporter with a disability. Blind since birth, the 46-year-old from Wigston attends every home fixture with her guide dog Quizzie, where they sit together in the South Stand.
She has praised the work of the Club’s supporter services team, in particular Disability Liaison Officer Anna Dickman, as well as the matchday stewards, who all contribute to making her experience on Filbert Way a positive one.
She said: “There’s lots of provision available for me and my guide dog on matchdays, and staff are very welcoming, especially the stewards. A lot of the fans who sit around me have become friends; they’re all so lovely and it’s just fantastic. Everybody is so understanding and very encouraging. It’s such a nice environment for the both of us.”
A lifelong Foxes fan, Becca has been attending games for a number of seasons, firstly with her previous guide dog Jolly, but more recently Quizzie.
She added: “I was born with no vision at all, and then operations were done, and I was able to get a tiny bit of sight in my right eye. My guide dog is obviously everything to me in terms of mobility and getting around and feeling the confidence to go out and be free. To be able to attend games at King Power Stadium and enjoy the day is brilliant. We love coming to Leicester City and it’s just a wonderful experience.”
Becca listens to games through an audio descriptive service, which offers full match commentary, with headsets available to collect from the matchday staff entrance at King Power Stadium.
“The audio descriptive service is absolutely amazing," she explained. "It’s similar to what you’d hear on a radio station when they’re doing match commentary, however this is more in-depth as they describe what is happening on the pitch.
“You get to know your players and know exactly where they are and what they’re doing on the pitch, so it’s just great. The commentary really involves you and it’s a massive thing for supporters who are blind or partially sighted – I can’t praise it enough.”
Commending the work of the Club’s Disability Liaison Officer and wider staff team, Becca explains that it is not only on matchdays that LCFC have been supportive.
“Anna and the team have been so approachable. You can contact them at any time, whether that be via phone or email, and they’ll answer your questions, no matter what it is. If you’ve got any concerns or worries, or just need some reassurance, they are there for you and happy to support.
“Before Quizzie came to her first match, they allowed us to bring her down on a non-matchday so that she could get used to the stadium and its surroundings. That was really helpful because it allowed Quizzie to familiarise herself with the place and become more confident.
“We both love coming to games and enjoy the matchday experience. A lot of the stewards now know me by name, which is lovely because I know they’re talking to me, and that is so appreciated.”
