_- LCFC Women held to goalless draw at home to Reading on Sunday_- The point takes the Foxes closer to their target of WSL survival- Lydia Bedford believes they created enough chances to win the game- Attention now turns to the final game of the season at Tottenham
In what was billed as a crucial encounter against the Royals at King Power Stadium, Leicester created clear-cut chances to win the game but ultimately were unable to find the breakthrough and were indebted to goalkeeper Demi Lambourne for a smart late save that kept the scores level.
Speaking to LCFC TV, the manager gave her post-match assessment of the stalemate, feeling that the hosts executed their game plan well and did more than enough to come away with a positive result.
She commented after full-time: “From start to end I think the girls put in a really resilient, well organised, compact performance, which allowed us to capitalise on moments where we regained it.
“I think, if anything, we’re a little disappointed not to have taken three points as the game grew, but the most important thing today was that we got at least a point out of the game, and I’m really pleased with them that they did that.
“There were plenty of chances. Shannon [O‘Brien] had two in the first half that were reasonably good opportunities and then in the second half once Tash [Flint] came on, there were a few past that point too, so a little disappointed, but a point makes the race at the bottom a bit more competitive so we’ll take that.
“They worked hard; they didn’t have a lot of the ball. Reading possessed the ball a lot and were able to build in areas as a result of that. What was key for us is that we kept our shape, and we took something from what we learned from playing Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal.
“But then we actually showed more quality in possession, and I’m pleased that we did that because we hurt them at times when we won the ball back.”
Moving a point further away from bottom of the table Birmingham City, who have a game in hand to play in midweek but lost 1-0 to Chelsea later on Sunday evening, it leaves the gap at five points heading into the final week of the season.
The Foxes travel to face Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (12pm kick-off), while Birmingham tackle Manchester City on Wednesday before their last game is away to city rivals Aston Villa four days later.
Bedford continued: “I think this performance gives us a platform to build on for the Spurs game next week and I think the players will be in a good place mentally as a result of that.
“We won’t know the outcome of where Birmingham sit until Thursday morning, so I think it’s important that we prepare for Spurs as if it’s a must-win game for us. If we can take what we’ve delivered this week, then we’ll be in a good place come next Sunday.”
Ava Baker, a second-half substitute for the Foxes, was introduced for her WSL debut following two first-team cup appearances earlier this term.
Fresh from picking up the Player of the Match award in City’s WSL Academy Plate Final victory last weekend, the young winger’s tenacity and impact on the final 20 minutes impressed the manager.
The former England Under-19s coach added: “I’m really pleased for her, she came on in the FA Cup game against Spurs earlier in the year, but we’ve not had her with us since. She’s had lots of games for her own age group, which has been really important for her development, but I'm so pleased to see her have an impact at this level, it’s great for her.”
