- LCFC Women beaten 4-0 by Manchester City at Academy Stadium- It was a fourth straight WSL defeat for the Foxes on Sunday- Khadija Shaw (2), Lauren Hemp and Yui Hasegawa all scored- Manager Lydia Bedford says the second half let the side down
Going in at half-time with a one-goal deficit, courtesy of Khadija Shaw’s header, Leicester were well in the game at Academy Stadium, creating a couple of clear-cut chances of their own during the opening 45 minutes.
But the Foxes were unable to contain a rampant Man City display after the break, as Lauren Hemp, Shaw and Yui Hasegawa added further gloss to the scoreline in the final 20 minutes and undid the visitors’ hard work.
Reacting to the loss, the manager told LCFC TV: “We were pretty pleased with the first half and how we came out and matched some of their shape and their rotations. I think [in the] second half we dropped off in terms of our levels and that shows in some of the goals that were created. “The penalty is harsh in terms of not following up and getting the rebound, but then their second and fourth goals were well taken finishes and they are a top team, so that is going to happen at some point.
“I think we’re disappointed with the end result, but we’ve got to reflect on the second half and what we could have done better to try and keep ourselves in the game for longer.
“We’d spoken pre-game about the importance of set plays and obviously [in the] first half we’d won a couple and nearly scored from a corner. We had a shot in open play, which is not something we thought would be a given within this game, so we were quite pleased.
“It was then a case of repeating that, but when we won it back, we needed to be better in looking after the ball and transitioning with the ball and I actually think [in the] second half that probably let us down a lot.
“We didn’t transition well enough, so then we turned it over and were defending straight away again. Quite a lot of what happened today comes down to our quality, not so much what Manchester City have done fantastically, so that’s something to reflect on going into next week’s game.”
There is little time to dwell on a fourth loss of the campaign, with another Barclays Women’s Super League fixture to come this Sunday, facing Manchester United at King Power Stadium (3pm BST kick-off). The 35-year-old added: “We felt it was the right formation against City to allow us to isolate one vs. one battles and be in a position to be more competitive in those areas. It’s something we’ll have to go away and reflect on now to what we think is right next week.
“I think that’s why we’re disappointed, because there’s no pressure on us to get something from today’s game, the only pressure is that which we put on ourselves to get better in each performance and I think at half-time we’d say we had done well with that.
“[In the] second half, we’ve probably not done as well as we should have done, so for us it’s now about learning from that and being ready for the Man Utd game.”
