Leicester City’s much-loved Ambassador Alan ‘The Birch’ Birchenall will be bringing his annual end of season run to King Power Stadium TODAY for an astonishing 37th consecutive year.
Sponsored by Mark English at MJE Contracts and Upton Steel, it takes place ahead of the Club’s final game of another memorable season against AFC Bournemouth, and will this year see the event raise funds for life-saving defibrillators.
It is to this vital equipment, as well as the quick actions of the medical service personnel in attendance, that The Birch owes his life, after he collapsed earlier this year at an awards ceremony and required emergency treatment.
Through Birch’s tireless fundraising in the years gone by, defibrillators have been sent across the county to key areas. So this year, all funds raised on the day will be going towards putting more of these life-saving defibrillators in places where they can have the best possible chance of saving lives, as well as vital CPR training equipment.
Birch’s annual event in support of the LCFC Foxes Foundation is a gruelling 90-minute long run around the pitch at King Power Stadium, something that has taken place prior to the final home game of every season for the past 36 campaigns, with all the proceeds going to charity. Players from both teams traditionally join the run as part of their pre-match warm-up as well as a host of local celebrities and sports stars – all of which adds to a fantastic atmosphere in the build-up to the season finale.
Well over £1million has been raised for hundreds of local charities during that time, with Foxes fans digging deep to donate all they can to the dozens of bucket collectors around the stadium on the day, as well as online.
Speaking to LCFC.com, Birch said: “It’s going to be more special than ever because I didn’t think I’d be here! So it’s extra special and on the day, all the money donated will go towards buying new equipment to help with CPR, which includes all the things that people need to go out and demonstrate CPR, as well buying defibrillators.
“For years the LCFC Foxes Foundation has been handing them out around the county and it’s something special. For obvious reasons, this year’s run is more poignant and I recognise exactly what defibrillators can do, so I hope it will be a great day.
“I wish defibrillators could be in every organisation and place of work. You can’t have them in enough places. I’m standing here today because a defibrillator saved my life and that was with the help of some great people around me. There was a defibrillator about two minutes away from me, if there wasn’t I wouldn’t be here today.
“I know that our fans, as they are every year, will be generous and dig deep. They can donate on the day and online so my message to them is that every little bit helps. You never know when it might be your life that needs saving, so even a pound can go a long way.”
