- Jonny Evans speaks exclusively to LCFC TV ahead of Leicester City’s Premier League match versus Manchester United- The Red Devils visit King Power Stadium on Boxing Day (12:30pm GMT kick-off)- Evans wants City to learn from their most recent clash with Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men- The Northern Irishman spoke of how Leicester nullified Spurs’ threat last time out
Brendan Rodgers’ men welcome Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s outfit to Filbert Way for a Boxing Day fixture that has become synonymous with festive football over the past few decades.
Traditionally, King Power Stadium would be packed with City fans, but this year the Foxes will rely on the Blue Army’s support from home.
And while Evans and his men will no doubt miss their vociferous input, the significance of facing the Red Devils on Boxing Day is not lost on Leicester’s classy defender.
“It’s always a great footballing occasion, playing on Boxing Day,” Evans exclusively told LCFC TV in an interview at Belvoir Drive in the lead up to the game.
“Obviously, in the past, it’s always been good to have the fans there and it’s a special time for the fans to come to all the games.
“That’ll be a little bit different, but it’s still a big match for us against a team that are in form also.”
Evans, who lifted three Premier League titles at Old Trafford having risen through the ranks at the Manchester club, will no doubt see some familiar faces when the Red Devils visit King Power Stadium.
“I suppose it does in a way,” he said when asked about whether this fixture is a stand-out one for him. “I still know a lot of the staff there and some of the players.
“It’s a club that I was at for a long time having come through as a young player there. It’s always a nice occasion to play against them and see people that I haven’t seen in quite a while.”
This campaign, and indeed many others, City have been no strangers to taking on England’s elite outfits and emerging victorious, having already beaten Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur on the road this term.
“It was a really pleasing victory against Spurs,” he said of his side’s latest outing. “I think, going back towards the end of last season, I know you have to move on, but we wanted to learn from that game and the way we played.
“I spoke before in an interview about stopping them on the counter-attack and I think we did that fantastically well at the weekend, and nullified their threat.
“We were very safe on the ball and didn’t take too many risks. It was one of them games, against a top side, that we had to play like that, and the game plan worked.”
Despite City’s 2019/20 campaign ending in a 2-0 defeat by their Boxing Day opponents, Evans insists the Foxes will learn a great deal from that game – with their win at Spurs a perfect example of that willingness to right last season’s wrongs.
"It’s always important to learn from previous games,” he said. “Looking back at the Tottenham game, we learned from that, but one thing we can learn from this game is they are a good counter-attacking side.
“That day, we tried to sit off and hit them on the counter-attack. They’ll be coming away from home in good form and it’s important to get the first goal. We know how quickly they can punish us.”
