_- Newport County are the visitors to King Power Stadium on Tuesday (7:45pm kick-off)__- South Wales Argus reporter Chris Kirwan looked ahead to the Carabao Cup tie_- County defeated Luton Town and Portsmouth in rounds one and two- He also analysed the Exiles’ 2022/23 season to date in Sky Bet League 2
The Sky Bet League 2 outfit take on their sternest challenge of the season so far, as they arrive on Filbert Way for a Carabao Cup Third Round tie against Leicester City. The 7:45pm kick-off presents the fourth-tier club with another opportunity to produce a cup shock, having knocked out Championship side Luton Town and then Portsmouth of League 1 in the earlier rounds of this season’s competition, both by a 3-2 scoreline.
County have previous with the Foxes, too, upsetting the odds to dramatically defeat Leicester 2-1 at Rodney Parade in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup back in 2019, but arguably face an even bigger test travelling away from home for this fixture.
“It was a cracking game against Portsmouth,” Kirwan began, speaking to LCFC TV’s Matchday Live show this week. “They showed resilience to win that 3-2 after they beat Luton from the Championship in round one, which was another good performance. “They have been entertaining games in the Carabao Cup so far, but it will undoubtedly be tough. The thing that’s different to previous years is that they’ve thrived on having a dodgy pitch and getting teams out of their comfort zone.
“Rodney Parade is a really good surface now, they can play good football, so coming to King Power Stadium, they’ll be okay with that, but it’s just a different test. They’ve got a lot of experience in the side who have been in those cup games, so I’m sure they can put on a good show.
“There’s always hope. From the start of the [Graham] Coughlan era, if they get those basics right, just frustrate Leicester and do that side of things, staying in the fight is the key to it and then try and hit them on the break. They have some players with pace.
“I think the fans will just want to see them give it a good go, get in their faces and not just go into their shells. One thing this season that has let them down is that they’ve not been quite as good with the ball as they were last season when they really pinged it around nicely.
“But they do have players who are comfortable on the ball. They’ll need to hold on to it, you can’t just invite pressure throughout. They’ll will go direct, into the channels and look to stretch the game as well. They’ve got some pace there.”
Currently sitting 18th in League 2, on 16 points from 17 games, the Exiles recovered from a slow start to pick up some impressive recent results against sides battling near the top of the table and climb four points ahead of the relegation zone.
Since Graham Coughlan took charge in October, they have taken five points from a possible nine, and also reached the Emirates FA Cup Second Round.
“It was a tough start to the season,” Kirwan admitted. “They started with a lot of hope for a promotion push and for whatever reason it didn’t quite happen under James Rowberry. They had some good performances but weren’t quite getting the results.
“In League 2, you can’t afford to get dragged into trouble, so the board brought in Graham Coughlan, who has had a good start. They’ve been very solid. They started with a much-needed win in the league against Colchester who are also down the bottom.
“Then they had two tough trips to Mansfield and Northampton, who are going to be promotion chasing, and they drew both of them. They probably should have won them as well. They’ve been keeping clean sheets and doing the basics well.”
Discussing Newport’s attacking talents, the journalist pointed to ex-Wigan Athletic and Cardiff City striker Omar Bogle as one of their main goal sources, alongside some promising youngsters.
He explained: “If he goes with a settled side, Omar Bogle will be the goal threat up top. He has plenty of experience in the EFL. James Waite has been playing well. He’s a small attacking midfielder and he’s feisty and will buzz around.
“There’s more to come from them in attack than what they’ve been showing in recent weeks. But that will come with time. Down the left, Adam Lewis is a Liverpool loanee and he’s good going forward so we’ll see what he can do.
“They’ve got some lively players like Thierry Neves, a West Ham loanee, who is elusive. Lewis Collins came through the ranks and is very quick. It’s whether they try and stay in it and bring them on.”
