- Leicester City were edged 1-0 by Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday in the Premier League
- Sam Vokes struck in the 87th minute to earn three points for Sean Dyche’s men
- Claudio Ranieri made three changes to the side that drew 2-2 at Derby County on Friday
Leicester City were dealt a cruel blow late on at Turf Moor as Sam Vokes bundled a loose ball over the line to secure a 1-0 victory for Burnley on Tuesday evening.
Despite defending superbly in both halves, dealing with much of what the Clarets had to throw at them, City were undone with just three minutes to play.
A deep ball into the box struck Vokes’ arm before the substitute striker stabbed home to snatch it for the hosts.
Leicester, who had earlier gone close through Jamie Vardy, Wes Morgan and Riyad Mahrez, peppered the Burnley box with deliveries in injury time, but could not find a deserved equaliser in Lancashire.
For the fixture, Claudio Ranieri handed winger Mahrez his first start since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations alongside Demarai Gray and Wilfred Ndidi – the latter exceptional in the centre of midfield throughout.
The Foxes started positively in the pouring rain at Turf Moor, with Demarai Gray, who looked brilliant during the 2-2 draw at Derby County on Friday, latching onto a long ball that was eventually cleared at the near post by Michael Keane.
Shortly after, a superb Christian Fuchs delivery from the left dropped to Mahrez, who had a shot blocked, while Robert Huth was also denied in the same move following some good defensive work from Burnley.
The hosts responded inside 10 minutes, but after breaking through, Ashley Barnes couldn’t direct his effort from a tight angle on target.
Barnes did much better with his next attempt, this time flicking towards goal, only for City stopper Kasper Schmeichel to stand strong and block the Clarets No.10’s strike with just over 15 minutes played.
Building on those two good chances, Sean Dyche’s men next came close through Andre Gray, whose powerful left-footed drive hit the side-netting.
Vardy, alert to a loose ball following a strong tackle from Matt Lowton, then raced in on goal, but miscued while under pressure midway through a lively first period.
An ambitious 30-yard strike from Joey Barton then sailed well off target with 34 minutes on the clock as both sides traded blows in Lancashire.
Barton clipped the roof of the net with another long-range drive late in the first period, while City’s best chance of the opening 45 minutes fell to skipper Morgan, who headed Marc Albrighton’s free kick over the bar from close range.
Midfielder Barton threatened again immediately after the break, this time hammering just wide of Schmeichel’s upright with three minutes of the second half gone.
Schmeichel watched substitute Scott Arfield’s curler fly wide five minutes later, before the Denmark international pulled off a fine save to turn away Andre Gray’s fearsome attempt from inside the City area.
At the other end, Heaton denied Mahrez after a mazy run from the Algerian and while the ball fell kindly to Vardy, the Foxes No.9 couldn’t convert.
Another Mahrez strike deflected just off target after hitting Keane, before a huge penalty shout for City was dismissed – Vardy tangled with Heaton in the Burnley box, but there was nothing given.
Intelligent positioning from Danny Simpson then saw the Leicester right back hook the ball away from the lurking Barnes at the far post with over an hour played at Turf Moor.
A series of huge blocks from the Leicester back line followed, as efforts from Gray, Keane and Jeff Hendrick were all turned away with around 20 minutes to go.
Burnley maintained pressure, with Ben Mee this time sending a bullet header just inches over the City bar on 72 minutes.
More good goalkeeping from Schmeichel kept out Andre Gray with a point-blank save six minutes later, before a comfortable stop from Heaton followed, as he collected substitute Ahmed Musa’s header.
But the decisive moment arrived with just three minutes to play, when the ball fortunately dropped to Vokes, who made no mistakes from three yards.
It proved to be a heartbreaking blow for the Foxes, who had they been more decisive going forward, would have certainly had a chance of winning it themselves.
Ranieri’s men must now dust themselves down, as they prepare for Sunday’s visit of Manchester United to King Power Stadium.
