Although heading into the clash at King Power Stadium without a point in their opening five Barclays FA Women’s Super League fixtures, the Foxes are within touching distance of the teams immediately above them in the standings at this early stage of the season.
The visiting Citizens currently occupy one of those spots in the bottom half of the WSL table, though Gareth Taylor’s side will be considered the favourites to claim the points in the 2pm kick-off on Filbert Way, given the quality of players at their disposal.
However, speaking in Thursday’s pre-match press conference, O’Brien spoke about how Leicester must concentrate on their own aims and targets to produce a positive display on the day. “It’s a massive opportunity, but there’s no pressure,” the midfielder stated. “Everyone knows the situation that we’re in, but we’re improving every week and you see that with the performances.
“It’s a big opportunity to just go and play with no fear, go and play with some freedom and take on one of the best teams in the country and hopefully cause an upset. We just need to back ourselves.
“I don’t think we focus too much on the team that we’re playing. We like to focus on ourselves and what we can do. We know we can cause any team problems; we can cause an upset to anyone when we’re on it and when we’re on form.
“It’s just about focusing on what we can do and just having belief from the first minute that we can do something, start the game quick and start the game on it. We’ll see what happens. Hopefully, if we start like that, we can get something from the game.”
The 20-year-old played from start to finish in the 3-1 reverse against Everton in midweek and believes they can take a lot away from the game and move those positives into the weekend’s encounter. “To be honest, we were disappointed with the first half," the former Coventry United star reflected. “We need to start playing at the tempo that we played with in the second half for 90 minutes.
“I think we dominated in the second half, and we could have pushed on more than we did and, when we got one back, we could have probably pushed on again and got an equaliser.
“It didn’t happen, but the performance was there in the second half. We’re positive from that but disappointed with how we started the game, so I think going into Man City, it’s about playing like our second half but for 90 minutes.”
