The behind-closed-doors showdown (4pm BST kick-off) will bring the curtain down on the 2019/20 season, which has seen the Foxes qualify for European competition. Back in 1996, however, it was in the League Cup that the two sides met, as Martin O’Neill welcomed Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils to Filbert Street for a fourth round tie. Leicester City’s route to the 1997 League Cup Final saw the Foxes defeat lower league opposition in the form of Scarborough and York City, before facing Premier League champions Manchester United at Filbert Street in the next round.
Ferguson had opted to make five changes from the side that drew 2-2 with Middlesbrough in the league four days earlier, but still boasted the likes of Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and Karel Poborský in his starting XI for the cup tie.
City, meanwhile, came into the game off the back of a defeat at home to Everton and brought in midfielder Scott Taylor for Julian Watts, as well as replacing goalkeeper Kevin Poole with Kasey Keller.
Some 20,000 fans watched on as a brilliantly taken goal from Steve Claridge – volleying into the corner with his left foot after being set up by Emile Heskey's superb flick – set the Foxes on their way to victory just before the break. Scholes then had a golden opportunity to level the scores from the spot, but sent his penalty sailing over the bar.
And United would rue that missed chance as Heskey sealed the win with 13 minutes left on the clock, half-volleying his shot into the back of the net from close range.
Leicester went on to knock out Ipswich Town and Wimbledon before defeating Middlesbrough in a final replay at Hillsborough, lifting the cup for the second time in the Club's history.
