- Leicester City defender Conor Coady speaks after Saturday's pre-season win- The Foxes secured a 1-0 success at Northampton Town- Coady is excited by the promising signs on show in training at the Club
The England centre-back joined the Foxes this summer ahead of a huge season for the Club. Under the guidance of Manager Enzo Maresca, sights are set on a promotion charge and an immediate return to the Premier League.
Preparations for that challenge continued on Saturday with a 1-0 success over Northampton Town at Sixfields Stadium, courtesy of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's first-half header. Coady says he's loving pre-season with his new colleagues in north Leicestershire after two weeks in a new setting.
"Obviously, there’s a lot of work to do," the former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender said. "There’s a lot of work that we’re doing at the minute. We’ve had two weeks of working with the Manager in double sessions and different things.
"You can see the different ways and different styles we’re trying to play. We’re loving it. We’re really enjoying it and hopefully we can build on today and keep on getting a few more wins in pre-season.
"[Building a] winning mentality is a massive thing. We need to instil that feeling into everybody, not just the players or the staff, but the supporters as well. We need to know that we’re going into a game to put our stamp on it. We’re there in every department to put our stamp on it. That’s a massive part of it. There’s so much for us to learn. The Manager’s giving us so much information every day and I think you can see a different style of playing.
"[The players have] made me feel welcome. Training’s been fantastic. I’m loving every minute of it. I’m loving playing with the boys, listening to the Manager and learning from him every single day. We want to keep on improving. We know how big the season is for us. We know what we need to do and it’s important we use these next few weeks to build into the Coventry game."
Coady, 30, has been particularly enthused by the focus of training sessions in Seagrave, with everyone placing a priority on the style of play which Leicester will deploy this term.
"It's been a bit of everything," he said, explaining the summer programme so far. "The running sessions have been hard, really hard, but everything’s with the ball. Everything’s with a purpose in terms of where your position is, where you play on the pitch. It’s been brilliant. The good thing about it is that we’re talking about the way we play every single day.
"Whether that be at 10 ‘o’clock in the morning or half-five in the afternoon, we’re talking about the way we want to play. We’re trying to improve, finding pockets in games and different ways of playing."
Coady was signed on the same day as former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks and before the loan addition of Callum Doyle from Manchester City two weeks later. Doyle's arrival excites the St Helens-born centre-back.
"He’s done incredibly well," Leicester's new No.4 added. "He’s had two loan moves. He did incredibly well with the promotion at Sunderland and nearly got there with Coventry. He’s got a lot of league games under his belt and he’s experienced. He’s only a young lad but he’s got experience in the league with what he did last season.
"I think he’s going to be invaluable for us. He’s so assured on the ball. He’s a big lad and he can defend properly. It’s up to us to talk him through a game as well. He’s a young lad coming to a fantastic club and it’s up to us to help him every single day. I’m pretty sure all the boys will do that in the changing room including myself."
The Blue Army took up three stands at Northampton's Sixfields Stadium at the weekend, backing the boys in blue ahead of a crucial campaign. Coady says the Foxes will need them as they strive for promotion this season.
"They were brilliant," he said. "We need them. We want that feeling. I’ve mentioned to the boys a couple of times about what a season in the Championship can do if it’s going well with the crowd behind you. We need them more than anything because it’s such a big season for us."
