- Leicester City defeated Derby County 3-1 at Pride Park on Saturday- It was one of two friendlies across a single day, with another side beating Preston 2-1- Assistant manager Chris Davies, who took the side at Derby, was pleased with the performance- He also reserved praise for the three goalscorers against the third-tier Rams
Davies oversaw one XI at Pride Park during a 3-1 victory over Sky Bet League 1 outfit Derby County, while Brendan Rodgers was in charge as another City side emerged as 2-1 winners at Preston North End. Leicester have now contested five matches in pre-season.
Kelechi Iheanacho, Patson Daka and Callum Wright found the net for City in Derby and Davies was delighted with the quality on show.
"The performance was really good, I’m really happy," he told LCFC TV. "I thought it was a good game to watch for the neutral. Obviously, it was a great atmosphere here. Our fans really generated that with their support. Overall, I think we deserved to win the game.
"We had large control of the game for the most part and scored some good goals. Fitness-wise, it was always going to be a challenge because we’ve got players going from 45 minutes to 90, which is a big jump, so it was always going to be a challenge in the second half.
"They coped with that really well so I’m very pleased."
Davies also elaborated on the reasoning behind Leicester deciding to contest two friendlies on a single day. The opportunity it provided for more players to load essential match minutes into their legs was one which the coaching staff believe would benefit them ahead of the new season.
"We did it three years ago, if you remember, at Rotherham and Stoke," he explained. "If you can do it, it’s a really, really useful thing. If one team all goes up to Preston, of course, players then aren’t getting the minutes and then your squad is a little bit weaker for that.
"Our big objective was to come through these two goals, yes, with a good performance, but also with players staying fit and getting the minutes. It puts us in a great position now for the Sevilla game and moving into the season."
The nature of City's three goals - all requiring different skillsets - was also particularly pleasing for Davies.
He added: "They were very different goals in the sense that Kelly’s was build-up play down the right, with Castagne… that pass from Tielemans to Castagne, that we’ve seen so many times, and then it was a great cut-back and Kelly, from outside the box, the touch and finish were brilliant.
"Then we got a different type of goal where Mendy turns, he’s got space and time, and he just lifts the ball in behind and then it’s as simple as that. Patson times his run well and he takes a really good second touch to open up the angle to finish it.
"I was really pleased with both of them and I must say Callum Wright, who’s done really well in pre-season, he did really well when he came on. Not just for his goal, but the way he contributed to the team. He’s a player that you can really trust and he really deserved it.
"He followed in with a striker’s instinct. He followed the shot from Youri to finish, so I’m really, really pleased for Callum."
