Ben Chilwell says Leicester City are excited to contest Friday’s Emirates FA Cup tie at Derby County – a fixture which he believes will be a special occasion for the Club.
The England Under-21s international could potentially have a first taste of an East Midlands derby when for their fourth round fixture.
It is set to be a thrilling clash that Chilwell knows will be hard-fought having witnessed the first team compete in local derbies since he joined the Club at the age of 12.
“The lads are really excited,” Chilwell told LCFC TV ahead of the game. “Obviously Derby are our local rivals, so it’s a match that all the lads, the staff and the fans will be looking forward to. It’s a big match and we’re all positive.
“It’s a local game against good opposition, so it’s going to be a good match. If both teams turn up on the day, it’ll be a really good match for the neutral to watch. We’re going there to do a job, which is to win the match, so hopefully we can do that.
“I’ve never played in a crunch derby match before for Leicester. I did at Huddersfield on loan, but obviously I’ve been at Leicester since I was 12 years-old and I knew it was always a special occasion when we were in the Championship.
“When I was younger, we’d go into the games and you do see they’re crunch games. The players are up for it, as are the staff and the fans. Every game is competitive, but there’s just that little bit more competitiveness in these games.
“If I do play, I’m looking forward to that challenge of coming up against good opposition in a derby match.”
Not only will it be an exciting game for the players to be involved, but also for the 5,400 members of the Blue Army that are making the trip to Pride Park.
Chilwell added: “The away fans are vital in these sorts of games. Especially our fans when we’re away from home, you can always hear them wherever they are in the ground.
“They’re always loud and help you out and when you score, it’s always nice to go over and celebrate in front of them. It will really help, especially with that many fans travelling to Derby. It’ll be a massive boost for the boys.
“You’ve got fans that have supported Leicester for years and years, and then you’ve got newer fans that are very passionate too. With Derby being such a local team, the rivalry goes back a long time.
“It’s close with wins and losses, so it’s a big game, but not just for us, but for the fans too. Everyone at Leicester wants to win this game.”
