- Leicester City face Notts County at LCFC Training Ground in a friendly fixture on Saturday- The 1pm kick-off will be broadcast live and for free on LCFC TV from 12:45pm- Midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has provided an update on his personal progress this summer- The talented former Blackpool and Luton loanee believes he is building the fitness needed for 2022/23
At the Club since the age of eight, the Academy graduate has taken a unique route to becoming a key player in Brendan Rodgers' squad. A regular star of City's Development Squad, two loan spells – at Blackpool and then Luton Town – enabled Dewsbury-Hall to build on his undeniable talent. Now a 23-year-old midfielder renowned for his tenacious play and his unyielding desire on the pitch, the 2021/22 season was a memorable one for the Shepshed local. But he's already looking ahead, not content with the progress made, determined to use that progress as a platform.
"I’ll be honest, it’s been a tough one," he told LCFC TV, reflecting on pre-season so far. "We got straight back into it. We had ball work on the first day. We’ve done a lot of runs. The intensity’s been really good and the lads have come back in good shape and in good spirits. We’ve got a lot of good work done. "It’s just about getting that feeling in the legs now and getting ready for the first couple of [competitive] games. I’m still that hungry lad that wants to prove himself. Nothing’s changed for me, even though I did have a good year. After everything that’s happened, I’m still that lad that’s motivated as ever to really want to push on. I’ll always have that, I’ll never want to rest and feel like I’ve done good.
"I just want to kick on to the next thing now. I still want to really show what I can do and build on last year’s performances."
Dewsbury-Hall believes the work done so far in Seagrave this summer, plus the work yet to come, will tee him and his team-mates up to enjoy a successful campaign. City's No.22 says he feels 'the fittest he's ever been' on the eve of the Club's first pre-season friendly fixture.
Notts County are the visitors to LCFC Training Ground for a 1pm kick-off on Saturday. "I think I’m in a really good place, physically, technically and mentally," Dewsbury-Hall continued. "I feel like I’m the best I’ve ever been, the fittest I’ve ever been. That can only be a positive and we’ve still got a lot of weeks to go until the start of the season where I can keep building and getting stronger.
"Come the start of the first game, I’ll be in a place where, in my opinion, I’ll be stepping up a gear on what I was like last year."
Gradually over the past fortnight, a staggered return of several key senior players has occurred, as a result of each individual's international schedule at the beginning of the off-season. James Justin, Çağlar Söyüncü, Jonny Evans and Luke Thomas are among the latest to rejoin Rodgers' cohort. "It's nice to get some of the lads back, some familiar faces," the Academy graduate explained. "To be honest, you’ve got to give credit to the younger lads. They’ve come in and they’re in good shape. They’ve come back rock strong and trying to prove a point.
"I feel like the intensity’s been good, but you’ve got big players coming back, so it’s going to step it up a gear. That’s exactly what we need coming into this stretch of four or five games. We’ll be looking to try out things that we’ve tried in the first two weeks [of pre-season] and see how they go and take it all into the first game."
With preparatory games now on the horizon for Leicester, Dewsbury-Hall welcomes the start of City's pre-season fixtures. Those friendlies offer something which cannot be replicated in training, according to the midfielder, who is excited by the opportunity to pull on the Club's colours once again.
"Every footballer will tell you that pre-season is not the nicest time of the year, but it’s always nice to have these games to look forward to," he said. "It’s hard to replicate that in training. You don’t get that match tempo, that match feeling, so getting those games in just gets you ready for the start of the season.
"The first one’s at the end of this week, so it’s a bit of a reward for our hard work in the week, and all the lads are looking forward to it.
"It is important to get that match feeling, that fitness, back in the legs. That’s the main focus, getting the minutes, getting used to being back on a pitch again, but look, it is always about getting positive results. You want to build a confidence going into the games.
"You don’t want to have pre-season games with not winning. That breeds not much confidence in people. It’s a bit of both, getting ready for the [league] games, and having that mentality to be ruthless and keep it up until the first game of the season."
