- LCFC Women take on Chelsea this Sunday evening- The Barclays Women’s Super League fixture is a 6pm GMT kick-off- Aileen Whelan looked ahead to the meeting with the Blues- Tickets for this weekend’s match can be found HERE On Friday afternoon, Whelan spoke to the media to preview City’s WSL clash with Chelsea on a double-header weekend on Filbert Way, which first sees the Men’s First Team welcome QPR on Saturday. Having recently seen the squad join back up following the international break, the captain is excited to get going again and knows the challenge that lies ahead.
“It’s been a long international break, especially for us that stayed behind,” Whelan voiced. “But we’ve worked hard, and now that everyone’s back, we’re excited to get back going again.
“We had a few days off and it was a nice time to press the reset button, but now we’re back in and ready to go again for the rest of the season. It’s down to us now to carry on that momentum, and not worry about the gap in-between and carry on when we left off.
“If you look at the table, every fixture is important and we want to finish as high as we can so we need to pick up three points as much as we can – it’s not one game that defines that, but all of them.”
Leicester were beaten 5-2 last time out against the Blues, but with new players arriving since then, the former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder believes Sunday’s match will have a different outcome. Whelan added: “It was a different dynamic when we played Chelsea last time, we’ve got players back from injury and Willie [Kirk] has more options so that’s always a good thing. “Going into the weekend, Chelsea have some players missing so we need to capitalise on that and play as well as we can by tackling them when they’re at their downfall at the moment.
“Every team has got a weakness; you’ve just got to be able to punish them. We may only get a couple of chances but if we put the ball in the net both times, then it gives us a chance to get three points.
“These are the best games that you can play. They’re the best teams so if you get three points against them then you can do it for the rest of the season.”
Considering how the team has changed in her two seasons at Leicester, Whelan spoke about the commitment made by all those involved and hopes to do the talking on the pitch.
“We’ve been on a journey since I’ve come in,” the No.10 continued. “The staff and players have worked tirelessly to turn that around and now it’s a club with a direction that players want to come to - we’ll be a top four team in years to come.
“We’ve got some brilliant youngsters coming through who can hold their own. Maybe they just lean on us a little bit, but you’d be surprised if you saw them in training so in a lot of ways, they make us better.
“The league table will speak for itself by the end of the season. We’re striving for that perfection so finishing as high as we can up the table will be the main target.”
