In the final FA Cup competition to be completed in the 20th century, Leicester entered at the third round stage, facing second-tier Birmingham at home for a place in round four…

Leicester remained unbeaten at Filbert Street throughout December, beating Southampton and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, before a stalemate with Blackburn Rovers, having already defeated the Lancashire side at home in the League Cup earlier that month.
And success was to follow in another prestigious cup competition at the start of 1999. Martin O’Neill freshened up the side that drew with Rovers five days prior, bringing in Stuart Campbell and Gerry Taggart in place of Robbie Savage, a future Birmingham player, and Steve Walsh – who found the Foxes’ equaliser that day.
It was another defender who got the ball rolling against Birmingham, too, with Frank Sinclair netting the first of three goals in the opening 45 minutes. Just six minutes later, Rob Ullathorne continued the scoring, but the visiting side soon had a lifeline.
Steve Robinson managed to half the deficit with 10 minutes of the first period remaining, allowing Birmingham to go into the half-time break with a timely boost.
That would last just six second half minutes as Tony Cottee restored the two-goal advantage. Steve Guppy then put further gloss on the scoreline, while there was still time for another at the other end, courtesy of Dele Adebola’s 89th-minute strike. By then, however, it was clear that Leicester would be the team progressing.
Later that month, while, the Foxes were knocked out of the competition themselves, beaten 3-0 by Coventry City in the fourth round tie at Filbert Street, O’Neill’s men would reach another cup final, overcoming five opponents before Tottenham Hotspur emerged victorious in the final at Millennium Stadium.
City: Keller, Elliott, Taggart, Ullathorne, Sinclair, Campbell, Guppy, Lennon (Zagorakis 85’), Izzet (Parker 85’), Cottee (Marshall 74’), Heskey.
Goals: Sinclair 20', Ullathorne 26', Cottee 51', Guppy 70'.
