- Pre-season began for Leicester City's players on Monday- The squad returned to Seagrave ahead of 2023/24 - Defender Harry Souttar gave insight into the schedule- New Foxes Manager Enzo Maresca has also started work
Monday morning’s gruelling testing sessions in the gym and dome at LCFC Training Ground were followed by a chance to get the footballs out for the first time.
And after a post-season break at the end of last term, the defender feels refreshed and ready to go again, as focus shifts to being in the best shape possible for this new campaign.
“It's been good,” Souttar revealed, speaking from inside the King Power Centre. “You can probably tell by my breathing that we just finished our running session there. It was [tough], I was sweating and I'm still trying to catch my breath back, but it's always good.
“Coming in the first day, it gives you a baseline of where everybody is at and each individual is different. We had gym testing in the morning as well as the running tests and then we’re back out on the grass for another session.
“That's what pre-season is about. I think all the boys came back really good. A lot of them are on internationals, so it just keeps the fitness up, really.
“Day one is all about that baseline and everybody can work up from there. But over the coming days and weeks, we're just going to get fitter and fitter.”
Following a press conference with the media, new Manager Enzo Maresca took charge of his first session on the pitch on Monday afternoon, joined by First Team Coach Danny Walker, providing a first chance for Souttar and his team-mates to work under the Italian.
The 24-year-old revealed: “We met all the manager and the staff this morning. Everybody introduced themselves. Obviously, it's always nice coming in and speaking to the players and the staff and just catching up with them because you've not seen each other in four weeks.
“So, it's nice to get reacquainted again, but you can see everyone's got the focus and everyone's ready to go from the first day and for us to have a really big season.”
Travelling away with Australia last month, the Socceroos jetted off to China for an exhibition match against world champions Argentina, with the centre-back playing 90 minutes of the contest out in East Asia.
“We were in Beijing and we had a friendly there against Argentina,” he explained. “And it was good to get another game in with a different climate and different kind of pitches.
“But I really enjoyed it and I was just kind of keeping up the fitness as well, which is nice. I then had a couple of weeks off after that, and now coming back in, I’m ready to go.”
