The iconic ex-City duo joined several Members on Tuesday night as they unveiled some of their best moments while at the Football Club during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
City supporter David kicked-off proceedings by asking Taggart and Elliott – a formidable centre-back pairing during their playing days – about their proudest moment in Leicester colours.
“Dear me, I’ve too many to mention and I could go on for five or so minutes, and you know what? I am!” joked Taggart. “I’m going to rattle on for a bit. I’d say in third place, my proudest moment was the game against Red Star Belgrade, scoring the goal.
“We knew they were a top-class European team and we were in for a difficult evening at the old Filbert Street, so for me to actually get on the scoresheet that night and secure the draw – we should have won that game – was a really proud moment for me.
“Second in the list, I’d have to say, was winning the League Cup in 2000. Obviously, my good friend Matt, who’s on your screen, scored the two goals, so it’ll probably be in his top three as well, if not his top one.
“That was just a great day, losing against Tottenham Hotspur the year before and getting straight back to Wembley. I think we were all just determined to make sure we didn’t lose that game. I was really proud to have all of my family there, it was a big, big day for everyone involved in the Club as well as obviously for the fans as well.
“But I’d have to say, probably my proudest moment was getting promoted back to the Premier League when the Club went into administration. The season we went down, I’d missed that whole season and made a cameo in the last game at Filbert Street, but it was too little, too late.
“So, first and foremost, I was just glad to get back to fitness. Yes, we might have been one of the favourites to go back up, but when you look back, it sort of saved the Club in a way as you know it today.”
As Taggart pre-empted, Elliott’s most enjoyable moment came when he scored a brace at Wembley Stadium in the 2000 League Cup Final against Tranmere Rovers.
“Quite predictably, Gerald was right, as is usually the case,” Elliott said. “But just coming to the Club itself was quite a proud moment. The 2000 cup final, and the semi-final, I hasten to add, because I managed to nick the winner in the second leg against Aston Villa.
“I was shoved up front, and we’d had a bit of criticism in the first leg as well. If I’m not wrong in saying, the gentlemen listening tonight will probably be able to remember, but we got a bit of unwarranted criticism, really, and around that period in general.
“Getting through to the final itself, as Gerry says, we had the upper hand and we were trying to make amends for the year before, so to get a second opportunity, we didn’t want to let it slip.”
Foxes fan Charles, meanwhile, asked about Taggart and Elliott’s all-time five-a-side team made up of Leicester City stars.
Elliott said: “Unfortunately, Tags, as much as I’d like to say me and you are not in it, five-a-side-is a different kettle of fish because you need a solid defender, a couple of midfielders and your goalscorer up top, but I’m going to be a bit more adventurous than that!
“In goal, I was thinking of our era and putting Pegguy Arphexad in there, but then there’s Kasper Schmeichel and Peter Shilton and then the late Gordan Banks wasn’t bad either! I’ll go Banks in goal to start.
“I’ll then go Neil Lennon – I know he’s not a defender – then Muzzy Izzet and Riyad Mahrez in midfield, and then it’s Jamie Vardy or Gary Lineker. I’ll go Lineker, but it could be either!”
Charles was then asked for his five-a-side by Elliott. He said: “Like you, I was stuck between Vardy or Lineker, but I went for Vardy because of the speed. Then it’s difficult when you look at the best players we’ve had.
“I’ve put Muzzy Izzett and Keith Weller in midfield, and Steve Walsh in there to be a defender and midfielder. But it’s Gordon Banks in goal for me.”
Taggart’s five-a-side team also included Gordon Banks, N’Golo Kanté as a defender, Keith Weller and Mahrez in midfield and Vardy up front.
“There’s mobility and a little bit of nostalgia in there,” said Taggart. “Everyone always tells me how good Keith Weller was as a player. I never saw him live, but Birch never shuts up about how good he was!”
Following the Q&A, 2020/21 Fox Member James won a shirt from the Club’s retro collection, signed by Taggart and Elliott.
