- International Women’s Day activities held at King Power Stadium- Ashleigh Plumptre, Janina Leitzig, Aileen Whelan and Sophie Howard took part in workshops with Leicester City in the Community- More than 30 girls from four different primary schools were in attendance at the event
Attended by Ashleigh Plumptre, Janina Leitzig, Aileen Whelan and Sophie Howard, the City quartet met more than 30 girls from four primary schools across the region for a fun-filled occasion on Filbert Way. They enjoyed a range of different workshops with the Club’s charitable arm, which included dance, circuit training, body confidence and information about the Her Game Too initiative.
Participants were also treated to a Women in Media activity, where four female members of the Club’s media team discussed their career journeys before helping children to create their own kit designs.
Speaking at the event, Foxes defender Howard told LCFC TV: “It’s important to teach children about what it means to empower women. As professional footballers, we strive to empower women every day, so for these girls here today to learn about how important they are is a great thing. “It’s crucial that girls have role models in their lives and people to look up to because we discussed about the fact we didn’t really have any female role models in sport when we were growing up, so hopefully we can become those people to them.”
The players took time out to share their stories with the girls and answered questions about their careers and how they first got involved in football and sport.
For goalkeeper Leitzig, who signed for LCFC Women on loan from Bayern Munich in January, it was a great experience to be out in the community.
“I really enjoyed myself, it was good fun”, she commented to LCFC TV. “We are in an age now where women’s football has developed a lot, and our stories will hopefully act as inspiration for the children as they grow up.
“It’s a really big honour for me knowing I am in a position to inspire other girls, and it was great to be able to sign autographs and have pictures with them.”
Marked annually on 8 March, International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements, educate and raise awareness for women’s equality and to call for positive change advancing women.
Year five pupil Miley from Launde Primary School talked through her different experiences from the day’s activities.
“It’s been really fun,” she said. “I enjoyed the dancing and exercise workshops the most because they were so good.
“The players gave some nice answers at the Q&A, such as when they’ve been called boys in the past for playing football but carried on playing any way. I really liked that, and they were inspiring.”
