- Jess Sigsworth scored inside the opening minute of LCFC Women’s clash with Man City- The visitors eventually triumphed 4-1 in Sunday’s WSL encounter at King Power Stadium- Sigsworth spoke of her mixed emotions after the Foxes’ sixth league defeat of the campaign- The forward is now hoping to put her name on the scoresheet more regularly in the coming weeks
The forward was elated to score her maiden LCFC Women goal inside 60 seconds but was on the losing side as Man City triumphed 4-1 in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League clash at King Power Stadium. Strikes from Caroline Weir, Keira Walsh, Lauren Hemp and Lauren Coombs took the game away from the Foxes, who had hopes of recording their first points of the season in front of a vocal 2,464 supporters on Filbert Way.
“We’re very disappointed with the result," she reflected while speaking to LCFC TV after the full-time whistle. “We started bright, and we got that goal early on and we truly believed we could win when we came out for the second half. "But it was just a little bit disappointing then to concede goals that we really shouldn’t have conceded.
“They’ve got a really good side and we’re still quite new to this league and have still got a lot to learn, but I feel like each week we are improving as a team and our performances are getting better. We just need to stop conceding silly goals.”
It’s been a frustrating few weeks for the former Manchester United striker, who was without a goal in seven appearances across all competitions for her new side.
That frustration was quickly forgotten as she slotted the ball past City ‘keeper Karima Taieb before wheeling away in celebration in front of the Leicester fans. The Doncaster-born attacker is now determined to kick on and continue to find the back of the net more regularly.
“It was amazing, a great feeling to score,” the 27-year-old continued. “As a striker that’s what you want to do and I’m really happy now I’m off the mark. Now one’s gone in, I’m hoping that I can get into a rhythm and keep scoring each week.
“I think after the first goal went in, we dropped off a bit and we caused our own problems. We still went in at half-time full of belief that we could go and get a goal.
“We changed formation; we went to a 4-3-3 as wanted to be a bit more aggressive in our press. but in the end Man City’s quality shone through.”
There’s little time to dwell on Sunday’s result, however, with high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion the Foxes’ next opponents at AMEX Stadium on 14 November (2pm GMT kick-off).
“Preparation starts now,” Sigsworth added. “We’ll go into that game full of belief that we can win it and we’re excited. Hopefully we can get off the mark with our first win.”
