- LCFC Women entertain Manchester City at Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday- Both sides have a chance of making it through to the League Cup Quarter-Finals- Abbi Grant previews the fixture and the introduction of manager Lydia Bedford- The forward also discusses her own return to the squad and fitness after injury
The forward, who signed for the Foxes in the summer, picked up a foot injury in the final pre-season friendly before the campaign got underway, which ruled her out of the opening months of the season. Now, having returned to fitness and been included in the matchday squad for City’s last three fixtures, the 26-year-old told LCFC TV about her desire to gain some minutes on the pitch. “I’m fit and raring to go,” Grant commented ahead of the clash with the Citizens. “It would be great to get an opportunity because I feel I’m in a really good place right now fitness-wise.
“It (the injury) was difficult as it was in the last game of pre-season. It was hard to take as I thought I had a bit of momentum going into the season. To then watch from the sidelines was difficult.
“Now I feel like I’m ready to help the team out of the position we’re in and I’m hoping that, coming back, I can do that.”
Following defeat to Arsenal at the weekend, the Foxes are now looking to pick themselves up in their final Continental Tyres League Cup group stage match, which presents an opportunity to progress into the knockout stages. The game, manager Lydia Bedford’s first at home since taking charge, represents another chance to implement her tactics and ideas, despite the short break between the fixtures.
Grant continued: “It’s been a short turnaround from Lydia [Bedford] coming in. That was our first game getting to work on things that she wanted to work on. I think we did quite well, hopefully in the next coming games we can put that into practice more.
“It’s always difficult playing against Man City no matter what, so I think it’ll be a tough game, but equally it’ll be good to work on what we’ve been working on.
“You can always hear the fans and it’s great to see them and all their support so we’re hoping that they can all come out and cheer us on.”
With one eye on Sunday’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League meeting with Birmingham City at King Power Stadium, the forward also discussed coming up against her former side - for whom she made 20 appearances, scoring three goals, in what will be a crucial encounter for the bottom two teams.
The ex-Blues striker added: “Obviously I appreciate everything that I got at Birmingham, so it will be good to see them, but I want to go out there and get a result because we are both in vulnerable positions. That’ll be great to go to our home ground and get a result.”
Match tickets will be available to purchase on Wednesday evening from the Pirelli Stadium ticket office, with car parking also available.
