The Foxes are set to visit The Den in the third round on Wednesday (7:45pm BST kick-off) in their first competitive meeting with the Lions since 2017, but ahead of the tie, we roll the clock back to the springtime of 2009 as Leicester closed in on promotion back to the Championship... Steve Howard struck from outside the box to hand Leicester City a precious 1-0 victory over Millwall in March 2009 as the Club closed in on the League 1 title under the management of Nigel Pearson. The Foxes, relegated to the third tier for the first time a season earlier, were magnificent throughout the 2008/09 campaign, but there will still work to be done when Pearson took his side to The Den.
A typically raucous atmosphere greeted City in the capital, but it took only 22 minutes for the visitors to take the lead. It came about as Joe Mattock's upfield pass was cushioned down by defensive colleague Michael Morrison. He was able to tee up Howard, who did the rest.
Leicester's No.9 chested the ball down, taking it under his control, before unleashing a fearsome low drive into the bottom corner of Lions goalkeeper David Forde's net. Howard also came close to doubling his tally on the cusp of half-time, but his powerful free-kick glided just wide of the post.
Tony Warner, on the other hand, had to make a solid point-black save to deny Ashley Grimes in the second period. Top of the table and intent on returning to the Championship, the Foxes pushed for another goal to see the game out and they almost got it when Matty Fryatt broke free.
The top goalscorer in League 1 was played in by Andy King but his shot came back off the base of the post and he then missed the target with a header on the rebound. Leicester, though, were able to hold out for the three points and would eventually end the season as third tier champions.
