- Arsenal came out on top against LCFC Women at King Power Stadium- Four second-half goals contributed to a 5-0 defeat for the Foxes- Defender Sophie Howard spoke to LCFC TV after the final whistle- Sunday’s reverse was City’s fourth consecutive loss in the WSL
The Gunners raced into a 1-0 lead courtesy of Beth Mead’s strike and while City steadied the ship for the remainder of the half, a further four goals from Jonas Eidevall’s side, with Vivianne Miedema and Tobin Heath both on the scoresheet, made it a difficult afternoon for the hosts.
Remaining in 11th, on 12 points, the gap to Birmingham City at the foot of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League standings now stands at seven points following the Blues’ draw against Everton, with three matches to play.
“It’s a frustrating result for us,” the defender admitted to LCFC TV. “I think the biggest frustration is that we conceded so early on again and we’re going to assess that, because that can’t happen again.
“I think afterwards we fought back into the game, we held on to the 1-0 for a long time and in the end, it wasn’t good enough, but definitely an improvement from last week.
“What we can say today and what we can be proud of is that we put bodies on the line and we held a really compact shape. It was hard work. If you don’t have the ball and just constantly have to shuffle across, it is draining, but that’s what we had to do today.
“I do think we’ve stuck together, and we fought through the 90 minutes. I think there was a 10-15-minute spell where we conceded too easily, and again we’re going to have to assess that and be better at that, but there’s some positives to take from today and we go into the next week.”
Arsenal briefly returned to the league’s summit, until Chelsea, who overcame the Foxes last weekend, triumphed once more against Reading, demonstrating the quality of opposition City have been pitted against in recent weeks.
However, despite facing the top two sides in the division back-to-back, the former Royals star believes the side could have done more as a collective to prevent conceding 14 goals without reply across those two matches.
“It’s a tough spell of games, but we want to eventually compete with these teams,” the 28-year-old revealed. “It shows us how much we still have to do, how much work we still need to put in, but the good thing is that we can take positives from each game and that’s what we’re going to focus on.
“Obviously we have to be brutally honest and we’re not there yet. I think if we put a good performance in, a better performance, we can compete more. Today our in-possession game was not good enough, our transition game wasn’t good enough, but step by step, we’re going to get there.”
The tough fixtures continue when Leicester are back in league action in just under three weeks’ time, travelling to tackle Manchester City - another side positioned inside the top four. Before then, the centre-back is away with Scotland, while some of the squad will remain at Belvoir Drive to prepare for the season run-in.
She added: “This international break is going to be used for hard work, to work more on the pitch. Obviously for some players it’s going to be about recovery as well. Some girls are going off on international duty, but when we come back together, we’re going to pick up from where we are now and be ready for Man City.”
